Job Description

Sweetgreen is a prominent national restaurant brand that has been dedicated to reimagining fast food since its inception in 2007. With a focus on building healthier communities, Sweetgreen connects people to real, fresh food sourced ethically and responsibly through strong relationships with farmers and local communities. This commitment ensures that every dish served not only tastes great but also supports sustainable food practices. Sweetgreen stands out in the restaurant industry by emphasizing quality, flavor, and integrity in its offerings while fostering a culture of inclusivity and development for all team members. The company prides itself on being forward-thinking, incorporating smart kitchen systems and avoiding traditional fast food cooking methods such as grills and fryers, ensuring a healthier and safer environment for both employees and customers.

The Culinary Lead role at Sweetgreen, also known as Kitchen Lead, is a pivotal position focused on food quality and kitchen excellence. Unlike traditional kitchen leadership roles, this position is not a people management role and does not involve scheduling or performance reviews. Instead, the Culinary Lead acts as the food quality expert during each shift, setting the standard for how food is prepared, cooked, and presented. This position requires a strong passion for culinary craftsmanship, coaching, and consistency in food execution. The lead is responsible for ensuring that every item meets Sweetgreen’s strict standards for flavor, food safety, and presentation. They use knives, kitchen tools, and ovens to prep and cook hot food without the use of grills or fryers.

The Culinary Lead plays an essential role in maintaining kitchen operations smoothness by managing prep timing and inventory par levels. They provide real-time feedback and training to teammates to elevate food quality and execution continuously. This role works closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold food safety, cleanliness, and overall operational excellence. It offers a clear growth path for those aspiring to move into higher leadership roles, such as Shift Leader and General Manager, within two to three years based on performance. Sweetgreen values candidates who take pride in their work, want to lead through expertise rather than management, and want to be part of a movement that reshapes the future of fast food through fresh, healthy options.
