Job Description

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is a state government agency dedicated to building, maintaining, and operating Virginia's roads, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient travel for all citizens and visitors. As a leader in transportation infrastructure, VDOT is committed to upholding high standards of safety, security, and professionalism, while fostering an inclusive and supportive working environment. The agency emphasizes the importance of teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement to meet the growing transportation demands across Virginia.

The role of Operations Crew Lead for bridge tunnel patrol and traffic control is critical to VDOT's mission of providing safe and reliable transportation. This position involves leading the activities of the operation crew members and bridge tunnel patrollers to protect public safety on roadways and ensure smooth traffic flow. The Operations Crew Lead takes initiative in handling emergency situations such as hazardous material spills, multiple vehicle accidents, marine incidents, and structural damage events. In these high-pressure scenarios, the Lead coordinates resources, communicates with supervising Traffic Control Supervisors and control rooms, and provides timely updates. This role requires strong oversight of traffic control measures, safeguarding public roads by using proper safety techniques and emergency response protocols.

The Operations Crew Lead is also responsible for coaching, training, and supervising crew members to meet performance goals set by supervisors. This involves conducting performance evaluations, fostering a culture of ownership with clear expectations, and ensuring safety practices are rigorously followed to prevent unauthorized access to tunnels and hazardous areas. Regular patrols and inspections of facilities, equipment, and personnel ensure operational readiness and compliance with safety standards. The role demands thorough documentation and reporting of incidents, unsafe conditions, and traffic hazards.

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, compile accurate reports, operate telecommunication and radio equipment, and work collaboratively within a team environment. Knowledge of bridge tunnel operations, emergency vehicle handling, and safety/security protocols are essential. The position requires the capability to lead in routine and emergency situations, emphasizing safety and quick decision-making.

VDOT values candidates who have a combination of training, education, and experience in construction, emergency operations, or related fields. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and the ability to maintain DOT medical certification are important requirements, reflecting the need to operate specialized vehicles safely. Candidates should also possess practical experience with traffic control, safety procedures, wrecker operations, vehicle removal, and emergency management such as storm response and accident clean-up.

Working for VDOT as an Operations Crew Lead means joining a team committed to public service excellence, safety leadership, and community impact. Employment is typically full-time with competitive salaries commensurate with skills and experience. The role offers an opportunity to develop professionally within a dynamic and rewarding field, contributing directly to the safety and efficiency of Virginia’s vital transportation routes.
