California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) is a state government agency dedicated to providing high-quality health care services to the incarcerated population within California's correctional facilities. The agency operates under the philosophy of enhancing public safety and promoting successful community reintegration by offering education, treatment, rehabilitative, and restorative justice programs. CCHCS is committed to fostering inclusive, respectful, and professional work environments that emphasize the safety, wellness, and human dignity of all individuals under its care. The California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC), where this position is located, is a licensed health care facility providing round-the-clock patient services and is situated in a family-friendly city known for excellent schools, recreational amenities, and proximity to natural landmarks such as the American River and Folsom Lake. The region also offers convenient access to major destinations like Lake Tahoe and San Francisco, providing a balanced lifestyle for employees.

The Correctional Supervising Cook (Correctional Facility) role at California State Prison, Sacramento, is a part-time position with a monthly salary range between $917.20 and $1,127.80, reflecting an 8-hour workweek commitment. Under the guidance of the Food Administrator I/II or Supervising Correctional Cook, DOC, this position entails supervising and training staff and inmate-workers responsible for preparing meals for patients within the correctional health care setting. The supervising cook plays a critical role in overseeing the preparation and distribution of therapeutic diets as prescribed by physicians, ensuring compliance with all relevant departmental and institutional policies including Title 15 of the California Code of Regulations, Department Operations Manual, Standard Operational Procedures, Diet Manual, California Retail Food Code, and Food & Nutrition Services Manual. The incumbent is also responsible for supervising kitchen sanitation and the maintenance of food preparation equipment.

This position demands vigilance in maintaining order, supervising inmate conduct, and ensuring the safety of persons and property within the facility. It includes responsibilities such as enforcing compliance with safety and sanitation standards, managing food service operations, and providing leadership to meet the nutritional needs of incarcerated patients. Candidates interested in this role must successfully pass a specific examination to obtain eligibility. The position requires meeting minimum qualifications that include supervisory experience over cooks and food service workers or experience as a Cook Specialist II within California state service. Applicants must also undergo background and medical clearance processes prior to employment. The role offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully within a correctional health environment by supporting rehabilitative programs and promoting wellness among the population being served. CCHCS values diversity and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply, fostering a workplace where equity and inclusion are integral parts of daily operations.
