Job Description
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is one of the largest and most diverse correctional departments in the United States, founded in 1885. Located within this expansive network is the California State Prison, Sacramento (CSP-SAC), commonly known as New Folsom, situated in Folsom, California. This facility shares grounds with the historic Folsom State Prison and plays a crucial role in maintaining public safety through the secure incarceration of individuals, parole supervision, and the implementation of rehabilitative strategies to assist in community reintegration. CDCR is committed to fostering safe, humane environments that not only ensure security but also promote education, treatment, and restorative justice programs for incarcerated individuals. Additionally, CDCR emphasizes building an inclusive workplace that encourages employees from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, aiming to create a more professional and fulfilling work environment across its institutions.
The Correctional Supervising Cook (CSC) is a vital leadership role within the culinary operations at CSP-SAC. This full-time, permanent position offers a competitive salary ranging from $4,586 to $6,371 per month, with new state employees typically starting at the minimum salary of the classification. Under the guidance of the Supervising Correctional Cook, the CSC oversees various areas of the correctional culinary program, including but not limited to the bakery, production, chili blast, butcher shop, storeroom, vegetable preparation, distribution, and Minimum Support Facility. The CSC is entrusted with supervising incarcerated individuals while ensuring the proper rethermalization of all cooked and uncooked food served. Responsibilities also involve receiving, delivering, and maintaining accountability for food and preparation supplies distributed to different facilities and areas within the institution. Maintaining impeccable sanitation standards and safety in the work environment is integral to the role.
This position demands a leader who is adept at managing large-scale food operations in a correctional setting, one who understands the complexities of kitchen sanitation, food safety, inventory control, and staff supervision. The CSC will also engage in training programs for the staff and incarcerated workers, ensuring food is prepared efficiently and meets quality standards. Candidates eligible for Training and Development assignments may also be considered, reflecting the department's commitment to professional growth and workforce development. The role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to promote inclusiveness, and capability to work within a demanding correctional environment while fostering positive relationships with other governmental agencies and community partners. The CDCR also emphasizes compliance with safety protocols, background checks, and ongoing health evaluations, such as Tuberculosis testing, for all new and continuing employees. Overall, this role is critical in supporting CDCR’s mission to uphold public safety and rehabilitation through effective correctional food service management.
