Job Description
The Salvation Army is a renowned international movement known for its evangelical mission as a part of the universal Christian church. Motivated by the love of God, The Salvation Army's ministry is rooted in preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and addressing human needs without discrimination. As one of the largest and most respected charitable organizations globally, The Salvation Army has a profound impact on communities, providing social services and support to vulnerable populations. The organization is founded on Biblical principles and embraces diversity, collaboration, and a mission-driven approach to foster positive outcomes for individuals and families in need. With a significant presence in North and Central Illinois, the Chicago Temple Corps is a vibrant part of this wider network, engaging actively with the local community through various programs and services.
The Corps Program Assistant position, based at the Chicago Temple Corps, offers an exciting opportunity to be involved in the daily leadership and programming activities of The Salvation Army. This role is designed for individuals who want to gain hands-on experience working alongside Corps Officers and staff members in planning, leading, and supporting diverse community-focused programs. The position is non-exempt, temporary part time (TPT), with a pay grade of 201 and an hourly wage starting at $17.05.
In this multifaceted role, the Corps Program Assistant participates in a variety of programs such as Bingo, Women’s Ministries, Vacation Bible School, and other community events. The role includes responsibilities like program planning, facilitation, and supporting team members. The assistant is also expected to represent The Salvation Army at numerous community happenings including service clubs, school functions, and ministerial associations, which highlights the importance of strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
Beyond event coordination, the position requires active involvement with social services programs including food pantry distribution, stocking of supplies, and assisting clients with personal care items. The role also includes administrative duties like document scanning and file digitization, underscoring the need for computer proficiency and organizational skills. Physical aspects of the job include light physical work such as lifting up to 25 pounds and preparing facilities for programming.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a high school diploma or GED and preferably two years of relevant experience in event coordination or youth ministry. Strong computer skills, especially in Word processing, and the ability to handle confidential materials with discretion are essential. Furthermore, the role demands excellent verbal and written communication, the ability to multitask, initiative, and a positive, flexible attitude to adapt to changing priorities and environments.
Overall, this job offers a unique pathway for individuals dedicated to community service, looking to contribute meaningfully while developing their leadership and program management skills in a faith-based, mission-driven setting. Working with The Salvation Army at the Chicago Temple Corps not only provides an opportunity to engage with diverse populations but also supports the broader goal of doing the most good by meeting critical needs and promoting hope and dignity within the community.
