Job Description

Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) is a dynamic and diverse educational institution committed to fostering the academic, social, and emotional growth of all scholars. With a mission to ensure that all scholars become educated, self-directed, and productive members of society, GRPS provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment where each student's potential is nurtured. Established in Michigan, GRPS serves a broad community and is dedicated to equity, innovation, and the highest standards in education. The district not only values academic achievement but also places strong emphasis on creating safe and welcoming spaces for students, staff, and families. It upholds a policy of non-discrimination against any individual based on race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or other factors, demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The Food and Nutrition Department within GRPS plays a crucial role in supporting scholars' health and well-being by providing nutritious, attractive, and timely meals daily across various school locations. As part of this department, the Satellite Production and Utility position is vital to the efficient and proper operation of assigned food service areas. This role directly contributes to the nutritional education and overall school experience of students by ensuring meals meet the central menu standards determined by the Food & Nutrition Services office. This position is part of the Union of Grand Rapids Education Support Professionals (UGRESP) and follows the collective bargaining agreement regarding wages and working conditions.

The Satellite Production and Utility employee is responsible for overseeing food preparation, sanitation, and service efficiently while adhering to safety protocols and food handling procedures. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate inventory, ordering food and supplies as needed, and ensuring compliance with record-keeping requirements. The position requires active participation in meetings to enhance knowledge, efficiency, and team coordination. Employees in this role are expected to maintain punctuality, dependable attendance, and demonstrate professionalism in interactions with colleagues, students, parents, and the broader community. The work environment involves moderate to loud noise and physical demands including standing, lifting, and moving items up to 50 pounds. GRPS encourages applicants with diverse backgrounds and limited English skills to apply, reflecting the district's inclusive employment approach.

This role requires a current Accredited Kitchen Manager Certification or the ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire, with GRPS providing the necessary training for certification. The position suits individuals with strong reading and math skills, attention to detail for managing orders and records, and the ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team. Employees must also embrace the mission of GRPS by contributing positively to student health and the school community.
