Job Description
The hiring establishment for this position is a healthcare facility that provides compassionate, high-quality care and services to residents, including elderly and disabled individuals who require medical and supportive care. This facility emphasizes safety, sanitation, and excellent food service standards in all its operations, particularly within its dietary department. Focused on meeting federal, state, and local regulations, the facility operates with a commitment to providing nutritious, appealing, and safe meals to its residents, ensuring every dietary need and special requirement is met by a skilled food services team under careful coordination and oversight. The environment is warm and well-ventilated, designed to sustain the energy and focus needed to deliver quality food services within a medical setting. The facility also promotes continuous education for its staff and encourages adherence to established infection control and safety protocols across all departments to maintain a secure environment both for residents and employees.
The role being offered is for a Cook in this healthcare setting. The primary responsibility of the Cook is to prepare meals that comply with all relevant food safety regulations and dietary guidelines, making sure that each resident receives meals that meet their specific nutritional requirements and preferences. The Cook is tasked with reviewing menus, inspecting special diet trays, coordinating service with other departments, and implementing changes recommended by the facility's dietitian. Beyond food preparation, the Cook has administrative duties including completing reports and forms, assisting with standardization of work methods, and maintaining dietary records in line with facility policies. Cooperation with medical and nursing staff as well as other supervisors is also a key element of this position to ensure comprehensive care is delivered through food services.
This job requires the ability to handle large quantities of food, manage dietary production lines efficiently, and maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and order in the kitchen and storage areas. The Cook works within a schedule that can include day, night, or swing shifts and must be prepared to work beyond normal hours, weekends, or be called back during emergencies such as severe weather or evacuations. Safety considerations include using protective equipment when dealing with infectious waste or hazardous chemicals, following infection control protocols, and maintaining a safe environment from potential hazards including burns, falls, or exposure to diseases.
The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership, tact, patience, and enthusiasm while dealing with residents, families, staff, and visitors, often in challenging or emotional circumstances. The Cook will also be expected to contribute to a warm, calm atmosphere in the department while consistently pursuing new methods and ideas to improve dietary practices. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform tasks involving frequent pushing and pulling of carts, as well as sensory abilities like tasting and smelling food to ensure quality. This position requires a level of independence, flexibility, integrity, and a dedicated approach to provide exemplary service within the healthcare food service team.
