The Hampton Roads Convention Center, managed by Legends Global, is currently seeking a Cook/Prep Cook to join its dynamic culinary team. This role plays a critical part in delivering high-quality food preparation and cooking services that meet stringent standards for taste, safety, and presentation. The Cook/Prep Cook position is responsible for preparing food products as directed by recipes and supervisors while ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations including Health Department and ServSafe guidelines. This role demands fast-paced, efficient completion of assigned duties within the kitchen environment, maintaining cleanliness and organization of all work areas such as refrigerators, counters, tables, and storage areas. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in food preparation and cooking techniques, with an understanding of food quality, storage, and rotation practices.
The position offers a competitive salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience, and while it does not include supervisory responsibilities, it requires a team-oriented attitude and flexibility in scheduling including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. The Cook/Prep Cook must be able to work under the pressure of high-demand environments, adapt to changes, and manage competing priorities effectively. This role demands physical stamina and the ability to handle tasks involving lifting, pushing, and long periods of standing. Job Requirements
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED
- At least six months of experience in a commercial kitchen preferred
- Must possess basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Ability to speak, read and understand English
- Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
- Must be able to work flexible and irregular hours including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
- Must be able to stand and walk for long periods
- Must be able to lift and push up to 50 pounds regularly and move wheeled carts over 200 pounds
- Must be able to work in an environment with hot and cold temperature extremes
- Must be able to work in confined spaces
- Must be able to work under pressure and high-stress conditions
- Must adhere to uniform standards
- Must comply with health department regulations and ServSafe standards
- Must have good manual dexterity and balance
Job Qualifications
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED
- Six months of experience in a commercial kitchen preferred
- Must have sufficient math ability to accurately add, subtract, divide, multiply and perform other basic business math calculations
- Must speak, read and understand English well enough to converse with customers, supervisors and employees
- Understand written and oral directions and communicate effectively with others
- Creates and supports a team environment
- Scheduling flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required
- Ability to work efficiently in high-stress and fast-paced environments
- Must have a pleasant personality and adhere to uniform standards
- Must be compliant with health codes
- Must have attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and manage competing demands
Job Duties
- Adhere to Health Department and ServSafe regulations
- Prepare food products as directed by recipe and/or supervisor while maintaining strict adherence to standards and specifications
- Complete all assigned production priorities daily
- Maintain the cleanliness of the work area including refrigerators, counters, tables, storage areas
- Inform supervisor of any shortages or equipment malfunctions
- Demonstrate knowledge of food quality, utilization, storage, rotation and consistency
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor
