The role of Cook/Baker at Mercy Hospital is essential in supporting overall patient and caregiver wellness by addressing nutritional needs with precision and care. This full-time position operates on shifts from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., including every other weekend and holiday. The Cook/Baker plays a vital role in preparing a diverse array of meals for patients, caregivers, special events, and visitors. Responsibilities include reviewing menus and special orders to determine the quantities and types of food needed, following standardized recipes to ensure consistency and quality, and planning cooking schedules in collaboration with supervisors and dietitians to guarantee timely meal preparation. The Cook/Baker must also adhere strictly to HACCP guidelines for food safety, including proper storage, handling, preparation, sanitation, and maintenance of the work area. Close communication with dietitians is necessary to accommodate modified diets and efficiently utilize leftovers, reflecting the hospital's holistic approach to nutrition and patient care.
Candidates who thrive in this role will demonstrate a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, coupled with at least two years of cooking experience that covers a variety of menu items and food preparation techniques. Knowledge of proper food handling, preparation, and storage is crucial. Preferred qualifications include completion of a formal training program for cooks or at least three years of related experience, as well as successful completion of a culinary certification program. The role demands physical stamina—standing and walking for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working with standard food preparation equipment. A high level of dexterity is necessary for plating and garnishing, along with the ability to work in environments with temperature fluctuations and exposure to cleaning chemicals. Visual acuity to discern color-coded food labeling systems is also required. Personal protective equipment must be utilized as per standard precautions to maintain safety and hygiene.
The pay range for this position varies between 15.00 and 18.44 dollars per hour, reflective of new hire expectations and dependent on factors such as experience, skillset, and education. This salary range excludes additional pay practices like shift differentials and overtime, as well as the significant value of Cleveland Clinic's comprehensive benefits package, which includes healthcare, dental, vision, and retirement contributions. As a critical contributor to the nutritional services team, the Cook/Baker at Mercy Hospital enjoys the rewarding experience of fostering wellness through food, making a tangible impact on the comfort and healing of patients and the overall morale of staff and visitors alike.
