Job Description
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is a component of the U.S. Department of Justice dedicated to protecting society by confining offenders in correctional facilities that are safe, humane, and secure. The BOP fosters an environment that prioritizes public safety while also preparing inmates for successful reentry into communities. It operates a wide range of institutions and programs throughout the United States, focusing on consistent standards, effective inmate management, and rehabilitative opportunities. The agency values professionalism, integrity, and commitment to upholding the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law. Known for offering federal employment with comprehensive benefits and job security, the BOP attracts dedicated professionals interested in public service and correctional administration.
This specific role is for a Cook Supervisor (WS-7404-08 level) at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Atlanta, GA. This is a full-time, permanent position in the competitive service with an hourly wage range of $43.40 to $50.26. The Cook Supervisor will lead and oversee approximately 25-30 inmate workers assigned to various culinary duties including cooking, butchering, baking, meal assembly, vegetable preparation, and cleaning kitchen equipment. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring continual training to inmate workers on food production techniques, presentation, sanitation, and dietary requirements. This position also carries important security responsibilities such as key control, contraband searches, inventory management, and inmate accountability within the kitchen and food service areas.
The incumbent in this role plays a critical part in maintaining the efficient and safe operation of the institution’s food service, while ensuring compliance with established food safety standards such as those certified by the Food Protection Manager Certification accredited by ANSI. Additionally, the Cook Supervisor must ensure strict adherence to correctional policies and security protocols, as the safety and security of the institution takes precedence at all times. The position requires the ability to supervise effectively, offer leadership in a challenging environment, and balance culinary expertise with correctional responsibilities.
This career opportunity is ideal for individuals interested in public service within a federal law enforcement agency who are committed to maintaining high standards of food preparation and institutional security. Candidates will have the chance to contribute meaningfully to the rehabilitation process by training and supervising inmates, helping develop skills applicable to successful reentry into society. The role offers a steady schedule with occasional travel for training, and comprehensive federal benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave. This position does not provide telework or relocation expense reimbursement. Applicants must meet rigorous background checks, pass drug testing, and successfully complete training requirements prior to appointment.
Overall, this position offers a unique blend of culinary supervision, institutional security, and correctional management, making it an excellent career path for qualified individuals seeking to serve their country while enhancing correctional food service operations at a federal facility.
