Job Description

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is a United States government agency under the Department of Justice responsible for the administration of the federal prison system. Established to maintain a safe, secure, and humane environment for inmates, the agency plays a critical role in ensuring public safety and fostering a successful and secure reentry of offenders into society. The BOP is dedicated to the rehabilitation of individuals by providing educational programs, work activities, and health services, aiming to reduce recidivism and promote positive societal contributions after release. With a nationwide network of institutions, the BOP stands as a vital component in the federal law enforcement system and continues to uphold the ideals of the American republic and the United States Constitution.

This position is a full-time, permanent role located at the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) Allenwood in Gregg Township, Pennsylvania. The salary range for this position is $37.19 to $43.39 per hour, classified under the WS-08 pay scale with a promotion potential up to WS-08. Candidates will engage in a critical supervisory role responsible for overseeing inmate workers assigned to various food preparation and kitchen support tasks. The Cook Supervisor supervises 25-30 inmate workers who perform duties such as cooking, butchering, baking, vegetable preparation, dishwashing, and dining room work. This role includes continual training to update inmates' knowledge on food production, presentation, and sanitation, ensuring adherence to health and safety protocols in a correctional setting.

In addition to culinary supervision, the supervisor is tasked with overseeing security operations within the kitchen work area. This includes key control, yeast control, knife and blade accountability, inmate accountability, and conducting routine contraband searches. The position emphasizes that correctional responsibilities take precedence over all other duties, highlighting the incumbent's role in maintaining institutional security. The Cook Supervisor must work collaboratively with other correctional staff to uphold order and safety within the institution while managing food services efficiently.

Applicants must have an approved Food Protection Manager Certification from an ANSI-accredited provider, and current BOP employees in this role are considered to meet this selective factor. The role requires demonstrated supervisory ability and aptitude for working with inmates, coupled with extensive knowledge and skill in large-scale food preparation, including special and modified diets. Candidates should demonstrate thorough knowledge of food preparation principles, the capacity to follow standardized recipes, and the ability to adjust procedures as necessary.

This job requires candidates to be U.S. citizens, complete pre-employment screenings including background checks and drug tests, and successfully finish a three-week correctional training course. Occasional travel may be required for training or work-related needs. The position offers a comprehensive federal benefits package and presents a career path committed to public service, security, and rehabilitation within the federal corrections system. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about public safety, correctional work, and culinary supervision within a federal institution.
