Job Description

The United States Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is a federal law enforcement agency responsible for the custody and care of federal inmates housed in prisons across the country. This permanent full-time position falls under the WS 08 pay scale with an hourly wage ranging from $35.35 to $41.21. The position requires supervision and instruction of 25-30 inmate workers assigned to various cooking duties such as butchering, baking, vegetable preparation, dishwashing, and dining services. The incumbent provides continual training to inmates, updating their skills in all aspects of food production, presentation, and sanitation. Responsibilities extend to overseeing the receiving, storage, and issuance of food and non-food items used in the kitchen operations. Security duties are integral to the job and include key control, monitoring of yeast and blade usage, inmate accountability, and routine contraband searches within the work area. Additionally, as part of the correctional institution staff, the Cook Supervisor shares in the responsibility of maintaining the overall security of the institution, with correctional duties taking precedence over food service tasks.\n\nThe ideal candidate must possess strong leadership and supervisory skills, comprehensive knowledge of food preparation principles with an emphasis on large quantity cooking, and understanding of special diets, including high protein, low cholesterol, calorie-restricted, and sodium-restricted diets. A valid Food Protection Manager Certification accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is required to ensure compliance with food safety standards. The successful applicant will have the dedication to improving federal government operations and a commitment to upholding the rule of law and the United States Constitution. Travel may be occasionally required for training and work-related purposes, and a thorough background check, drug screening, physical examination, and a panel interview are mandatory prerequisites for employment. This role is not eligible for telework or relocation expenses. Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Possess Food Protection Manager Certification accredited by ANSI
  • Ability to supervise inmate workers
  • Aptitude for work with prisoners
  • Completion of Introduction to Correctional Techniques training
  • Pass pre-employment screening including drug test, background check, NCIC check and credit check
  • Meet age requirement (maximum 36 for original appointment) or provide proof of prior law enforcement coverage
  • Must not have disqualifying criminal history
  • Submit all required documentation including veterans preference if applicable
  • Ability to work full-time
  • Pass physical examination and panel interview
  • Must provide detailed resume supporting experience
  • Compliance with selective factor requirements

Job Duties
