Job Description
The Pittsburgh Veteran Affairs Health Care System (Pittsburgh VA Medical Center) is a reputable federal agency dedicated to providing exceptional health care services to veterans in the Pittsburgh area and surrounding communities. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, this institution plays a critical role in ensuring that veterans receive comprehensive, veteran-centered care, which includes a wide array of medical, nutritional, and support services specially tailored to meet their unique needs. At the heart of their commitment is the Nutrition and Food Service Department, which strives to deliver high quality, nutritious meals to patients, while maintaining strict standards of food safety and hygiene.
The Pittsburgh VA Medical Center is currently seeking a Cook Supervisor to join their dedicated team within the Nutrition and Food Service. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Pittsburgh, PA, with a competitive salary range of $34.88 to $40.66 per hour classified under the WS 6 pay scale and grade. The role requires a commitment to excellence in food production and service, with rotating shifts including weekends and holidays to meet the ongoing needs of patient care.
The Cook Supervisor position is pivotal in planning, producing, directing, coordinating, and monitoring all phases of food production within the facility. This includes managing the operation of both food production and service areas, ensuring compliance with established standards, diet manuals, modified menus, and production sheets. The supervisor will also be responsible for administrative duties and operational oversight in the absence of the Food Service Section Supervisor. The candidate must exhibit strong managerial skills, as they will oversee the effective supervision of staff, allocate subsistence and supplies efficiently, and optimize resource usage, including strict adherence to planned financial budgets.
This role involves participating actively in meetings and discussions on work schedules, budget requests, and staffing needs to ensure the quality and continuity of veteran-centered meal services. The supervisor will provide technical direction and training to staff, investigate work-related issues such as cost inefficiencies or low productivity, and directly supervise cooks and food service workers. The role demands a hands-on leader who can maintain operational excellence while fostering a cooperative and productive work environment.
The Pittsburgh VA Medical Center prides itself on offering a structured, supportive work environment that promotes professional development and recognizes the critical importance of nutritional support in the holistic care of veterans. Employees in this role will be part of a team dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of veterans through exceptional food service management practices, working in an environment that values safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Applicants should be U.S. citizens and be prepared to undergo standard federal employment suitability determinations, including a background investigation. The position carries responsibilities related to food safety, resource management, and staff leadership in a fast-paced healthcare setting. The Cook Supervisor is a supervisory role that offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on the daily lives of veterans by ensuring they receive nutritious, high-quality meals.
In summary, this role at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center offers a unique combination of culinary expertise, leadership, and operational management in a federally funded, stable employment setting with comprehensive benefits. It is well suited for individuals who have a passion for food service excellence, veteran support, and public service within a healthcare institution.
