Job Description

The Department of Education at the California School for the Deaf, Fremont (CSDF) is a distinguished state institution dedicated to providing comprehensive educational services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Established as one of six State Special Schools under the Department of Education, CSDF operates on a sprawling 96-acre campus in Alameda County, California, shared with the California School for the Blind and the Diagnostic Center North. The school's strategic location offers convenient access via BART and the benefit of free employee parking, emphasizing accessibility and convenience for all staff members. CSDF is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that promotes educational excellence and holistic development for its students.

CSDF is currently seeking dedicated individuals to fill the position of Cook Specialist II. This permanent, full-time role operates on a 10-month academic calendar, aligning with the school year from August to June. The position offers a competitive salary range from $4,239 to $5,206 per month, with new State candidates starting at the minimum salary or alternate range as applicable. The Cook Specialist II plays a vital role within the school's food services team, working under supervision as part of a collaborative cooking team responsible for preparing meals that are not only appetizing and appealing but also safe for consumption. This position requires careful attention to food safety, preparation, and presentation practices to meet the nutritional and dietary needs of the school community.

In this role, incumbents are responsible for preparing, cooking, baking, and transporting a variety of food items according to production worksheets, ensuring adherence to safe food handling techniques and efficient use of leftovers to minimize waste. This position also demands leadership capabilities as the Cook Specialist II supervises Food Services Technicians in the absence of higher supervisory personnel, including the Supervising Cook II and the Director of Dietetics. The work schedule is from Monday through Thursday, 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, and on Friday from 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM, reflecting the operational needs of the school's dining services.

Candidates must have successfully passed the required examination for the Cook Specialist II classification to be eligible for employment. This ensures that staff members possess the requisite qualifications and competencies to uphold the high standards expected by the Department of Education and CSDF. The position is designated as safety-sensitive and subject to specific clearances, including tuberculosis risk assessment, FBI and Department of Justice fingerprint clearance, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

CSDF prides itself on equal opportunity employment, embracing diversity, inclusion, and non-discrimination in all hiring practices. The State of California supports a drug-free workplace and requires all applicants to comply with this objective. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about food preparation in educational settings, committed to safety and quality, and eager to contribute to a supportive, mission-driven environment serving the unique needs of deaf students.
