Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized evangelical movement and a pivotal part of the universal Christian church. Founded on biblical principles and motivated by the love of God, the organization has dedicated itself to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ while simultaneously addressing human needs without discrimination. The Salvation Army operates various social service programs, including shelters, food programs, and child development centers, acting as an essential resource for vulnerable populations across the world. Their holistic approach combines spiritual guidance with practical assistance, focusing on uplifting individuals and families affected by homelessness, poverty, or other hardships. The company embraces diversity and promotes inclusiveness, fostering a caring environment for residents, staff, volunteers, and community members alike.
Within this compassionate framework, the Cook role at The Salvation Army's Alegria Child Development Center and the Zahn Family Shelter is an integral position responsible for nourishing residents, staff, and children enrolled in after-school programs such as B.L.A.S.T. This full-time position involves planning, preparing, and delivering three nutritious daily meals and snacks in accordance with menus established by a professional dietician. Not only does the Cook contribute to residents' wellbeing by ensuring balanced and timely meals, but also plays a vital role in maintaining impeccable cleanliness and sanitation standards throughout food preparation areas, following Health Department guidelines on time and temperature to guarantee food safety.
The Cook's responsibilities include preparing specific meals such as breakfast, sack lunch, and dinner for residents, as well as delivering meals to partner sites like Lilly’s Place and Lafayette. This role also involves serving meals at designated locations, managing inventory and supply orders, organizing food storage using FIFO methods, and collaborating with supervisors to maintain quality and standards. Given the diverse needs of residents and children, the Cook may also prepare modified meals under dietician and physician guidance, ensuring dietary restrictions and health conditions are accommodated.
This position requires effective multitasking and time management skills to uphold quality control and adhere to meal schedules so that no more than 15 hours elapse between dinner and breakfast. Physical demands include lifting up to 25 pounds, and the ability to operate kitchen equipment safely. A valid Food Handler's Certification is mandatory, alongside a clean criminal background check, and the capability to drive when necessary for kitchen operations. Preference is given to bilingual English/Spanish candidates to foster effective communication with the diverse community served.
Beyond culinary skills, the Cook at The Salvation Army must exhibit cultural sensitivity and a non-judgmental attitude, respecting the unique circumstances of people experiencing homelessness or living with HIV/AIDS. The team-oriented environment encourages participation in staff meetings, workshops, and continuous learning opportunities. Ultimately, this role offers a rewarding chance to support a reputable nonprofit organization’s mission by contributing to the health and wellbeing of some of the community’s most vulnerable individuals while working within a structured and supportive environment. The employment type is full-time, supporting consistent hours with a focus on service excellence and operational integrity.
