The position available is a part-time detention cook role, offering an hourly wage of $20.28 for up to 24 hours per week, primarily on weekends and some holidays. This role is critical in supporting the operations of the detention facility by preparing meals for detainees and on-duty detention staff. The successful candidate will ensure the kitchen and dining areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, following all health department regulations and Texas Juvenile Justice Department standards. Duties include ordering and managing inventory of food, supplies, and kitchen equipment, as well as planning and revising menus in compliance with federal nutritional guidelines and the National School Lunch Program documentation requirements. The role also involves maintaining accurate meal and freezer records and participating in emergency management activities during a local state of disaster, as delegated by county management. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Working knowledge of federal nutritional and dietary guidelines
  • Two years job experience as a commercial establishment cook (residential supervision preferred)
  • Good computer skills
  • Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public and other employees
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Eligible to obtain Food Handler Certificate
  • Must be able to lift and stock approximately 40 pounds
  • Will be required to fill in as needed for full-time staff and some holidays

Job Duties

  • Prepares meals for detainees and on-duty detention

  • Prepares and maintains appropriate documentation for National School Lunch Program
  • Ensures compliance with local Health Department Regulations and Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) health standards and regulations
  • Maintains records of meals and of freezer
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers
