Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized faith-based organization committed to serving communities with compassion and dignity. Rooted in Christian values, it operates as an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, delivering social services and humanitarian aid without discrimination. The organization is known for a broad spectrum of services including disaster relief, rehabilitation programs, and community outreach initiatives to assist people in need. This commitment is reflected not only in their international mission but also in their local programs, such as food kitchens and shelters. The Salvation Army strives to provide hope and practical support to vulnerable populations through faith-driven initiatives and community involvement.
The role of Part-Time Cook within The Salvation Army's kitchen department is a vital position dedicated to providing nutritious meals in a respectful and efficient manner. This position offers 25 to 30 hours per week at an hourly wage of $21.27, classified as non-exempt and part-time status. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in all facets of meal preparation and kitchen maintenance, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. This includes cooking from scratch with minimal use of convenience foods, operating commercial kitchen equipment, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of kitchen facilities. Attention to detail and adherence to food handling protocols, including obtaining a Food Handler's Card, are essential.
The Part-Time Cook will play a key role in preparing and serving meals to those receiving services at The Salvation Army, helping to uphold the organization's mission of treating all individuals with dignity and respect. Responsibilities also include inventory management, receiving and organizing donations, completing necessary paperwork, and assisting in volunteer coordination. The work environment demands the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, often under time-sensitive conditions, while ensuring high standards of food safety and sanitation. Physically, the role requires the ability to lift, bend, twist, and stand for extended periods, reflecting the demands of working in a dynamic kitchen setting.
Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, a strong work ethic, and a compassionate approach to serving clients. This position involves frequent interaction with a diverse population, requiring excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure. The Salvation Army offers a supportive work environment where employees are encouraged to participate in team meetings and development opportunities. Accommodation requests in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act are welcomed to ensure an inclusive workplace.
Overall, this is an excellent opportunity for individuals with previous cooking or institutional kitchen experience who are passionate about making a difference in their community through hands-on service. By joining The Salvation Army as a Part-Time Cook, employees contribute to a mission-driven organization focused on meeting human needs and spreading hope through their evangelical and service-oriented initiatives. The position not only provides competitive pay but also a meaningful role where one can impact lives positively every day.
