The role of Cook within Salt Lake Behavioral Health's Dietary Department plays a crucial part in supporting patient care by ensuring the timely preparation and service of nutritious meals. This part-time position entails varied shifts and involves cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals for both patients and facility staff according to designated menu cycles and production sheets. The Cook is responsible for opening and organizing the kitchen daily, following recipes and menus meticulously to produce attractive and tasteful meals. A critical aspect of the job includes preparing meals that meet modified dietary requirements, often requiring close collaboration with the facility's dietician. Attention to detail extends to adhering to meal schedules, maintaining cleanliness throughout the kitchen and dining areas, and following strict food safety and sanitation standards including temperature control and proper food storage. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • minimum three years cooking experience preferably in quantity or hospital settings
  • food handlers permit required
  • ability to follow detailed recipes and dietician instructions
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation protocols
  • ability to manage time effectively to meet meal schedules
  • capability to maintain cleanliness and organization in kitchen and dining areas

Job Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent preferred
  • minimum three years experience in quantity cooking preferred
  • basic knowledge of modified diets
  • training in food service sanitation
  • experience utilizing industrial kitchen equipment and utensils
  • some prior hospital kitchen experience helpful
  • possession of valid Food Handlers Permit

Job Duties

  • Open the kitchen and ensure organization of daily events
  • cook meals following menus and recipes provided by the Dietary Manager and Dietician
  • prepare meals and beverages according to menu cycle and daily production sheet ensuring attractive and tasteful presentation
  • accurately prepare food for modified diets consulting with Dietician as required
  • complete meal preparation in a timely manner according to posted meal times
  • follow posted cleaning schedule and maintain clean work area and dining room at all times
  • document refrigeration and dish machine temperatures as scheduled
  • adhere to food temperature standards for cooking, serving and storing leftovers
  • maintain walk-in freezer and storerooms in an orderly fashion, properly date and label all food items
  • adhere to portion control guidelines to avoid overproduction
  • comply with sanitation and safety guidelines
  • interact with patients in serving line offering assistance in selecting nutritionally balanced meals
  • support harmonious working relationships within the department and the facility
  • report equipment malfunctions immediately to Dietary Manager
  • wash dishes and maintain dish room cleanliness
  • ensure all equipment is turned off, kitchen is inspected for cleanliness and properly locked at the end of the day
