Job Description

Montage Health is a prominent healthcare institution that operates the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, offering exceptional medical services and patient care to its community. Known for its commitment to quality healthcare and excellence, Montage Health fosters an environment that supports both patients and staff by emphasizing safety, integrity, and compassion. The hospital not only prioritizes medical treatment but also ensures that nutritional needs of patients are met through high standards in food preparation, reflecting their comprehensive approach to hospital care. They are seeking a dedicated professional to fill the Cook II position within their food services department, highlighting the role’s essential contribution to patient satisfaction and overall well-being.

The Cook II role at Montage Health is a vital position responsible for preparing high-quality, nutritious meals for patients and customers. Supported by the department director and supervisor, the Cook II is expected to produce food according to the specific recipes standardized by the hospital, ensuring consistency and quality in every serving. This position demands a higher level of responsibility than the Cook I role, as it involves managing a larger volume or more complex food productions, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner entrees. Additionally, the role includes the creation of at least one new recipe annually, demonstrating culinary creativity and contributing to menu innovation.

The Cook II must adhere strictly to safe food-handling practices and maintain an organized, neat workspace to comply with health and safety regulations. One unique aspect of this position is the occasional preparation of food for catering and special events, which requires flexibility and attention to detail. Montage Health offers this role as a per diem position involving 10-hour shifts with varied days and times, which means employees should be adaptable to changing schedules and ready to work when needed. The hourly pay rate is competitive, ranging from $37.41 to $50.07 based on experience, with additional shift differentials for evening and night shifts, ensuring fair compensation for different work periods.

This job not only demands basic food and beverage production skills and cooking experience but also requires the competence to work quickly and accurately under the supervision of hospital standards. The position emphasizes communication skills, requiring the ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English effectively, complemented by basic computer literacy. Candidates are expected to pass basic reading and math tests prior to employment. Importantly, certification such as the ServSafe Food Manager Certification, or a comparable credential, must be obtained at the time of hire or within six months of starting the position. This certification ensures the Cook II maintains up-to-date knowledge of food safety management, which is crucial in a healthcare environment where patient safety is paramount.

In summary, the Cook II at Montage Health plays an essential role that combines culinary expertise, safety compliance, and flexibility in scheduling to support the hospital’s mission of providing excellent patient care. This position offers professionals in the culinary field an opportunity to grow and contribute in a meaningful way within a healthcare setting, backed by a reputable employer committed to equal opportunity and workforce diversity.
