The Hale Hoomalu Juvenile Detention Facility, located in Kapolei, Oahu, is part of the Hawaii State Judiciary system. This secure detention facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a safe and supportive environment for juvenile detainees. The facility is committed to rehabilitation and care while maintaining strict security and operational standards. We are currently seeking dedicated and skilled individuals for the position of Cook II, classified under BC-08. This role is essential in maintaining the daily operations of the kitchen at the Hale Hoomalu Juvenile Detention Facility. The Cook II position primarily involves performing cooking activities either at a cooking station within a large kitchen or taking full responsibility for cooking activities in a smaller kitchen setting. Additionally, this role may include supervising kitchen helpers and cook helpers to ensure efficient kitchen operations.
The Cook II position requires flexibility in working hours due to the nature of the facility’s operation, which runs continuously without breaks. Employees must be prepared to work beyond the regular 8-hour shifts as well as beyond the usual 40-hour workweek. This may include evenings, days off, holidays, and short-notice work to assist with meal preparation. In this role, the Cook II will contribute directly to the health, nutrition, and wellbeing of the juveniles under the facility’s care by preparing safe, nutritious, and timely meals.
Qualified candidates for this position are expected to have related cooking experience or equivalent education that demonstrates skills and knowledge applicable to this role. Applicants using education as a substitute for experience are required to submit transcripts or diplomas during the application process, with official transcripts requested upon hiring. Job Requirements
- high school diploma or equivalent
- ability to lift and carry kitchen equipment and supplies
- availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- submit transcripts or diploma if using education as experience substitute
- pass background check and any required health screenings
