Job Description

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, an indigenous community with a rich heritage rooted in centuries of tradition, has evolved over time from a community that sustained itself through farming, hunting, and fishing to a modern tribal enterprise. Today, the Sycuan Tribe governs its Reservation located in the San Diego region and owns and operates several thriving businesses. These include the renowned Sycuan Casino and a prestigious Golf Resort, both of which contribute significantly to the local economy and community development. Beyond these ventures, the tribe also manages various other enterprises across the San Diego area, making it a prominent and diverse business entity.

Despite the transformation into a business-oriented organization, Sycuan retains its strong sense of community. The tribe emphasizes collaboration, integrity, and a shared vision across all its operations. Employees of Sycuan aren’t just staff members; they are part of a family that values teamwork and strives to provide remarkable experiences for all guests and community members alike. This philosophy is embedded within the organizational culture whether one works in the casino, resort, or tribal government divisions. Sycuan offers an environment where employees can grow professionally while contributing to the tribe’s collective success.

The current opportunity at Sycuan is for the position of Cook I, an essential role within the Food and Beverage or Culinary Management team. This hourly position plays a pivotal part in guest satisfaction by preparing menu items and food products that adhere strictly to approved recipes, cooking methods, and ingredient standards set by culinary leadership. The Cook I ensures consistency in flavor, quality, and presentation, which are critical in maintaining Sycuan’s reputation for excellence. In addition to food preparation, the role requires stringent compliance with health codes and casino operational standards, ensuring a safe and hygienic kitchen environment.

Functioning under the guidance of a designated Sous Chef, the Cook I works in a team-oriented setting and is expected to foster a positive, accommodating attitude towards guests and fellow employees. The position involves managing a designated workstation, understanding fundamental food products and equipment, and applying basic cooking methods effectively. Key skills such as knife proficiency, knowledge of food rotation methods like FIFO (First In, First Out), and the ability to read food order tickets are vital. The role also demands physical stamina to perform repetitive tasks, lift heavy items, and work long shifts while maintaining professionalism and composure.

Candidates interested in this role should be prepared to support operational goals by performing duties beyond food preparation as assigned by management. This job is ideal for individuals interested in building culinary skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while being part of a unique tribal community that values every team member's contribution. Sycuan provides an inclusive work culture with opportunities for professional growth and the chance to be part of a winning team dedicated to quality service and community pride.
