The role of Cook I at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital is a vital position within the Food Services Patient department. This is a per diem role offering variable shifts, including morning and afternoon hours, with a base pay of $25 per hour. The Cook I operates under the direct supervision of the Nutritional Services Supervisor and plays an essential role in preparing, seasoning, and cooking meals for patients, hospital staff, and visitors. The cook ensures that high standards of food quality and presentation are met by strictly adhering to production techniques, recipes, and dietary requirements established by the hospital.

In this role, the Cook I will be responsible for determining the types and quantities of food to prepare based on the planned menus, ensuring that meals are ready and served at specified times. This position also involves monitoring food usage, submitting supply orders, and consulting with the lead cook about leftover food management to minimize waste. The cook assembles meal trays according to prescribed diets in a timely and accurate manner and collaborates with Registered Dietitians when specialized or modified diets are required.

Sanitation and cleanliness are critical components of the position, with responsibility for maintaining the hygiene of all specialized cooking equipment assigned to the area. The role demands flexibility as it includes working alternating weekends and variable shifts ranging from early morning to late afternoon hours. This position is classified as nonexempt, allowing for overtime pay according to labor regulations.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one year previous experience in hospital food preparation
  • ServSafe Food Handler card
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Basic understanding of cooking terminology
  • Ability to work variable shifts including alternating weekends
  • Ability to maintain sanitation standards

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Determines types and quantities of meats, vegetables and soups to be prepared by reviewing planned menus
  • Ensures meals are ready at specified times
  • Determines amounts of foods needed to meet weekly menus and submits the order to the supervisor
  • Consults with lead cook regarding use of left-overs
  • Accurately prepares food items according to standard production orders, planned menus and/or recipes and completes frozen food production orders as assigned
  • Assembles trays according to prescribed diets in a timely manner
  • Consults with Registered Dietitian on modified diets as necessary
  • Maintains sanitation of all specialized cooking equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned
