Job Description

Global Connections to Employment (GCE) is a nationwide organization dedicated to providing meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities, including war-wounded veterans. Established in 1986, GCE has built a reputation as one of the largest private employers of persons with disabilities in the United States, working in partnership with the U.S. military, commercial businesses, community organizations, and various levels of government including federal, state, and local agencies. The company specializes in a diverse range of service areas including custodial services, facilities maintenance, food services, and other related business sectors. This broad base of operations allows GCE to offer a variety of career paths tailored to meet the specific needs and capabilities of its team members.

The Cook I position at GCE is a crucial role responsible for preparing and cooking a wide selection of food items accurately and efficiently across multiple meal periods such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special events. This role demands attention to detail, consistency in food quality, and adherence to health and safety standards. Operating within kitchens that may serve military or government personnel, as well as commercial clients, the cook must adapt to varying account requirements and business necessities, thereby ensuring all culinary offerings meet client expectations.

This job offers a compensation rate of $20.40 per hour, inclusive of Health and Welfare (H&W) benefits as mandated by the Service Contract Act (SCA). The current H&W rate is $4.93 per eligible hour worked, contributing to comprehensive employee benefits. The position involves physical activity including frequent bending, crouching, walking, stair climbing, reaching, sitting (for driving purposes), and lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds regularly, with occasional lifts up to 50 pounds. Work environments are primarily indoors but may involve travel to various locations with exposure to different weather conditions as needed.

Operating in compliance with emergency operation work assignments is a vital part of this role, highlighting the importance of flexibility and readiness in responding to customer requirements. Work schedules may extend to early mornings, mid-mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays, demanding a considerate approach to time management and personal availability.

Candidates must possess a fundamental understanding of kitchen operations, including the ability to read and interpret recipes and menus and follow oral and written instructions accurately. The ability to interact respectfully and professionally with customers, government personnel, subcontractors, GCE management, and fellow team members is essential. Furthermore, passing necessary organizational screening requirements, including state or federal background checks, is mandatory to maintain the integrity and security standards expected by the company and its clients.

GCE values diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applications from individuals with disabilities and veterans. The company operates a drug-free workplace with mandatory drug testing to ensure a safe, productive, and healthy work environment.
