Job Description

Horizons Youth Services is a dedicated organization committed to empowering young people by providing outstanding career technical and academic training opportunities. Operating through the Milwaukee Job Corps Center campus, Horizons Youth Services serves as a vital part of Job Corps, a no-cost residential education and training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. This program is designed for youth between the ages of 16 and 24 who seek to improve their quality of life through skill development in a supportive, structured environment. Horizons Youth Services stands out for its energetic, dynamic, and student-focused approach, striving to foster an environment where individuals gain valuable skills while receiving mentorship and encouragement from caring professionals.

The full-time role of Cook Helper at the Milwaukee Job Corps Center is essential in maintaining the smooth operation of the kitchen and ensuring that all meals are prepared with quality and care. This position plays a critical role in supporting the culinary team by assisting with meal preparation and service, ensuring that all food items meet the diverse dietary needs of the student population, including ethnic, vegetarian, and low-fat options. The Cook Helper will have direct interaction with students aged 16 to 24, acting as a positive role model, mentor, and provider of exceptional customer service to both students and staff. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in an educational environment that prioritizes health, safety, and nutritional standards.

As a Cook Helper, responsibilities include helping to prepare and serve meals from scratch while maintaining kitchen and dining area sanitation to the highest standards. This role demands a proactive approach in assisting with procedures involved in ordering, purchasing, receiving, storing, inventorying, and issuing food products. Protecting food and kitchen equipment from contamination and ensuring the safe and sanitary handling and storage of food are top priorities. Given the diverse backgrounds and dietary preferences of students, the Cook Helper must be adaptable and skilled in preparing various types of meal options that fulfill nutritional requirements and personal preferences.

This position requires enthusiasm, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to providing a high level of customer service. The ideal candidate will be someone who enjoys working in a team-oriented environment and is passionate about contributing positively to the student community by creating nourishing meals and a safe kitchen atmosphere. With a focus on development and mentorship, Horizons Youth Services fosters a supportive work culture that encourages continuous learning and professional growth within the culinary and educational fields. Joining as a Cook Helper at Horizons Youth Services means becoming part of a mission-driven organization devoted to helping youth succeed both inside and outside the kitchen environment.
