Job Description

The Cypress of Charlotte is a distinguished Life Plan Community located in the scenic SouthPark area of Charlotte, NC. This premier retirement community is set on 65 picturesque acres, offering residents a unique blend of luxury living, compassionate care, and an engaging community environment. The Cypress of Charlotte is currently seeking a full-time Health Center Cook to join their Culinary Services Department. This position offers a competitive hourly pay range of $20 to $22.51 and follows a flexible schedule with shifts varying between early morning and evening hours on an every-other-week basis. The Health Center Cook will play a critical role in ensuring that food preparation meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and nutrition to serve the specific needs of the senior community. This hands-on role requires versatility in working across all kitchen stations and proficiency in preparing a wide range of dishes including soups, stocks, sauces, and various cooking methods like braising, roasting, grilling, steaming, and frying.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong culinary skills combined with knowledge of dietary restrictions, allergies, and mechanical diets common in healthcare and senior living settings. They will be responsible for planning and producing meals that maintain temperature, quality, and presentation suitable for the health center's residents while adhering strictly to sanitation and health guidelines. Furthermore, the role involves inventory oversight to ensure adequate supplies are available for timely food production. Beyond cooking skills, the candidate should possess good communication capabilities and an ability to interpret complex recipes and dietary instructions to support the community's commitment to exceptional resident care.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum three years of cooking experience in a hospital, nursing home, health center, hotel, restaurant, or similar institution
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including early mornings and evenings
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding kitchen tasks
  • Must follow safety and sanitation protocols
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently
  • Commitment to maintaining a drug-free workplace

Job Qualifications

  • SERVSafe certification preferred
  • Experience in hospital or senior living preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical diets, food restrictions, allergies, etc
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic and understand measurements and conversions
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a cook in a hospital or nursing home/health center preferred, or hotel, restaurant, club or similar institution
  • Ability to plan and organize work, to interpret instructions, recipes, specifications and standards
  • Knowledge of kitchen equipment operations and maintenance
  • Some knowledge of nutrition and diet
  • Must be able to effectively communicate, read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English

Job Duties

  • Ability to work all stations in the kitchen
  • Efficiently runs assigned station during the shift, follow all specs, and stock food as needed
  • Maintains the quality of food and plate presentation
  • Prepares all soups, stocks, sauces
  • boils, braises and roasts items as per standardized recipes
  • Prepares and serves all sauteed, fried, grilled, steamed and baked items as per standardized recipes
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of all food served, following standard recipes and special diet orders
  • Plans food production to coordinate with meal serving hours, so that excellence, quality, temperature and appearance of food is preserved
  • Determines amount and type of food and supplies required for daily menus and seeing that supplies are obtained from storage areas in adequate time for meal production
  • Ensures all sanitation and health department guidelines are being met by maintaining cleanliness of station and assigned areas of the kitchen
