Job Description

The Cypress of Charlotte is a distinguished Life Plan Community located in SouthPark, Charlotte, North Carolina. We are currently seeking a Health Center Cook to join The Cypress of Charlotte’s Culinary Services Department. This full-time position offers flexible scheduling with shifts varying between early and mid-day hours, reflecting a commitment to work-life balance. The pay range is competitive, between $19 and $22 per hour, complemented by a generous $1,500 sign-on bonus to attract qualified candidates. The Health Center Cook plays a crucial role in ensuring residents receive nutritious, appealing meals tailored to various dietary needs. Responsibilities include full-scope, hands-on cooking and running various stations in the kitchen, preparing a diverse range of dishes including soups, stocks, sauces, and entrees following standardized recipes. The ideal candidate must be adept at managing food production timelines to maintain quality, temperature, and presentation excellence during meal service.

In addition to technical culinary skills, the Health Center Cook will uphold sanitation standards and health department regulations diligently, contributing to maintaining a clean, safe kitchen environment. Experience in hospital or senior living culinary settings is preferred, highlighting the specialized knowledge necessary to accommodate mechanical diets, food restrictions, allergies, and other dietary considerations unique to senior care. This role demands strong organizational skills as well as basic arithmetic capability for food measurement and conversions. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of cooking experience in a hospital, nursing home, health center, hotel, restaurant, club, or similar institution
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including early mornings and evenings
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift heavy items
  • Basic math skills and ability to follow recipes and dietary guidelines
  • Commitment to maintaining a drug-free workplace
  • Effective communication skills in English
  • Ability to adhere to sanitation and health department regulations

Job Qualifications

  • SERVSafe certification preferred
  • Experience in hospital or senior living preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical diets, food restrictions, allergies, etc
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic and understand measurements and conversions
  • A minimum of three years experience as a cook in a hospital or nursing home/health center preferred, or hotel, restaurant, club or similar institution
  • Ability to plan and organize work, to interpret instructions, recipes, specifications and standards
  • Knowledge of kitchen equipment operations and maintenance
  • Some knowledge of nutrition and diet
  • Must be able to effectively communicate, read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English

Job Duties

  • Ability to work all stations in the kitchen
  • Efficiently runs assigned station during the shift, follow all specs, and stock food as needed
  • Maintains the quality of food and plate presentation
  • Prepares all soups, stocks, sauces
  • boils, braises and roasts items as per standardized recipes
  • Prepares and serves all sautéed, fried, grilled, steamed and baked items as per standardized recipes
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of all food served, following standard recipes and special diet orders
  • Plans food production to coordinate with meal serving hours, so that excellence, quality, temperature and appearance of food is preserved
  • Determines amount and type of food and supplies required for daily menus and seeing that supplies are obtained from storage areas in adequate time for meal production
  • Ensures all sanitation and health department guidelines are being met by maintaining cleanliness of station and assigned areas of the kitchen
