Job Description

The hiring establishment is a senior living community dedicated to providing high-quality meal services to its residents. As a facility specializing in senior care, it focuses on delivering nutritious and appealing meals tailored to the unique dietary needs of elderly individuals. The community upholds strict food safety and sanitation standards in compliance with applicable health regulations, ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of residents. This establishment prides itself on creating a positive dining atmosphere that supports the overall health and happiness of its residents, combining professional culinary skills with personalized customer service within an institutional dining environment. The kitchen operations are managed by a Dietary Manager, under whose supervision the culinary staff works collaboratively to provide timely and efficiently prepared meals. The type of employment for the Cook role within this senior living community is a non-exempt position, which typically implies hourly wage compensation and adherence to applicable labor laws governing work hours and overtime.

The Cook position is crucial within this senior living community, responsible for preparing and cooking meals according to posted menus and recipes while maintaining adherence to portion standards and dietary requirements. This role supports the overall kitchen operations by coordinating with prep cooks and kitchen staff to ensure a smooth workflow during meal periods. The Cook ensures that meals served to residents are not only delicious and visually appealing but also nutritious and served at the proper temperature, enhancing the residents' dining experience. Attention to food safety and sanitation is paramount, as the Cook follows stringent procedures related to food handling, storage, labeling, and rotation to maintain health department compliance.

Beyond culinary duties, the Cook contributes to maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment, diligently monitoring food and equipment temperatures, and promptly reporting any equipment issues or supply shortages. While formal supervisory responsibilities are not part of this role, the Cook actively supports teamwork and communicates effectively with colleagues to optimize kitchen efficiency. This position also involves preparing special diets such as therapeutic and modified diets tailored to residents' specific health needs.

Furthermore, the Cook actively contributes to a positive dining atmosphere by responding professionally to residents' food-related concerns and maintaining respectful interactions with residents, families, and coworkers. Compliance with company policies, as well as relevant DHS regulations (DHS 83 and DHS 89), is mandatory. The role necessitates attendance at required meetings, trainings, and in-service programs to stay updated on best practices and regulatory standards. The Cook is expected to exhibit professionalism, punctuality, dependability, and attention to detail in all aspects of their work.

Physically, the role demands regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, and frequent lifting or moving of kitchen equipment and supplies, with the ability to handle weights ranging from 50 to 100 pounds. The work environment is characterized by moderate to high noise levels typical of a senior living kitchen and dining setting. Additionally, the role requires a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays based on community meal service needs. The Cook is also expected to respond appropriately to emergencies within the scope of their practice and perform other duties assigned by the Dietary Manager or leadership team as needed. Overall, this role is integral to the delivery of quality dining experiences that support residents' health, comfort, and satisfaction within the senior living community.
