Baystate Health is currently seeking a Full-Time Cook to join its dynamic Food and Nutrition Services team at Baystate Hospital's main campus in Springfield. This critical role involves preparing high-quality food items in a fast-paced healthcare environment, supporting retail, catering, and patient meal services. The Cook will be responsible for handling food safely, maintaining sanitary conditions, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards related to food safety, including HACCP, JCAHO, and DPH guidelines. The position operates on a 2nd shift schedule from 11 am to 7:30 pm, including alternating weekends and holidays, with shift differentials offered.

Successful candidates will have a minimum of one to two years of professional cooking experience in healthcare or hospitality settings, demonstrating advanced cooking methods along with strong organizational and math skills. The role demands an ability to work independently while also being an effective team player during high-volume cooking and production. You will be responsible for maintaining inventory control, managing production supply levels, operating and sanitizing cook-chill equipment, and following strict recipes with zero tolerance for deviation. Physical ability and the capacity to manage stressful periods on the job are necessary, as is fluency in English for clear communication.

Job Requirements

  • GED or HiSET
  • 1-2 years of professional cooking experience
  • ServSafe Food Handlers Certification
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability to work alternating weekends and holidays
  • Willingness to work 2nd shift including 11am to 7:30pm

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Perform safe and sanitary food handling techniques including glove use, cutting boards, and preventing cross-contamination
  • Ensure production supply levels meet daily menu and production needs
  • Operate and maintain cook-chill equipment safely and hygienically
  • Maintain temperature, quality control, and quality assurance logs per regulatory standards
  • Clean and sanitize all food production equipment and utensils
  • Work effectively under pressure maintaining quality and consistency
  • Collaborate with team members to assist in production and line cooking as needed
  • Work independently with minimal supervision to perform production, prep, or line cooking tasks
  • Prepare hot and cold food items within required timeframes following supervisor instructions
  • Support day-to-day operations and perform assigned opening and closing duties
