The Cook role at Hackensack Meridian Health centers on preparing, cooking, and serving nutritious meals for patients, staff, and visitors in adherence to high-quality standards. The position involves responsibilities such as food preparation according to production sheets and standardized recipes, ensuring compliance with state and organizational food safety regulations, and maintaining strict sanitation and hygiene standards. The cook manages food temperatures and inventory controls while effectively operating cooking equipment and maintaining HACCP logs. Emphasis is placed on teamwork and cooperation, with duties extending to assisting with cleaning, setting up and breaking down serving lines, and actively participating in staff development and quality improvement programs. This role demands a detail-oriented individual capable of working independently, yet collaboratively within a team. The hourly starting rate for this position is $25.77, aligning with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, with final compensation reflecting various non-discriminatory factors such as experience and education. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of hotel or restaurant cooking experience
  • Knowledge of proper cooking techniques
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Strong English communication skills
  • Ability to follow food safety and sanitation standards
  • Ability to operate cooking equipment safely
  • Willingness to adhere to all food safety regulations and procedures

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs
  • Minimum of 1 or more years of hotel and/or restaurant cooking experience
  • Observed good cooking techniques
  • Team player
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Associates degree in culinary arts preferred
  • Health facilities cooking experience or health care nutrition knowledge preferred

Job Duties

  • Performs all food preparation and cooking functions, maintaining all quality standards
  • Prepares food accurately following production sheets and using standardized recipes or other instructions as provided
  • Controls and adheres to all established procedures and State requirements regarding safe food handling, storage and service
  • Strict sanitation standards used at all times
  • hand washing practices, proper use of gloves, continuous sanitizing practices used on food contact surfaces, utensils, equipment, work station
  • Strictly monitor and maintain food temperatures at all times
  • Wrap, date and label all food items in storage
  • Adheres FIFO
  • Operates cooking equipment following established procedures and safety precautions
  • Monitors and controls quantities of foods prepared
  • Record leftovers and waste
  • Informs the Production Supervisor/Chef of any problems relating to the production areas

  • Sets up and breaks down the food serving lines efficiently and timely
  • Maintains and records HACCP log
  • Maintain HACCP standard and procedure, safety storage compliant and food safety regulation standard

  • Actively participates in cleaning assignments, overall sanitation, and housekeeping duties in the production areas with emphasis on individual work stations
  • Completes all assignments on daily production sheets and willingly assists co-workers as unscheduled production needs arise
  • Actively participates in hospital and departmental programs for Staff Development and quality improvement
  • Performs work mostly alone, but also as part of a team
  • Establishes and maintains efficient and effective relationships with all co-workers in the department and hospital
  • Readily performs and offers cooperation as other tasks or duties may be assigned
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior
