Job Description
Community Helping Addicts Negotiate Chance Effectively (CHANCE) is a dedicated peer recovery support center and emergency housing shelter located in Albany, Oregon. As part of its core mission, CHANCE provides meals and shelter to individuals battling addiction and those experiencing homelessness. The organization operates with compassion, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner to over 100 individuals per meal. The meals provided are uniform, ensuring simplicity and equality for all guests without the need for special orders or variations. CHANCE supports individuals in their recovery journey by fostering a safe, supportive environment where nourishment and shelter are fundamental components of healing and stability.
This position is a full-time Cook role responsible for preparing and serving meals in alignment with CHANCE’s meal plans and recipes to support the day center and shelter guests. The cook works independently or alongside the Kitchen Manager and other cooks, depending on daily staffing and shift schedules. The role involves preparing food for large groups, ensuring adherence to nutritional and sanitary standards, and maintaining a clean, safe kitchen environment. Scheduled hours include Friday through Sunday from 5 am to 1:30 pm, and Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.
The Cook will be entrusted with carrying out a variety of tasks such as baking, grilling, steaming, and boiling meats, vegetables, fish, poultry, and other foods. Key responsibilities include following precise recipes which incorporate measuring and mixing ingredients, plating and serving food, and performing necessary cleaning duties including washing dishes, sanitizing cooking utensils, cookware, and the kitchen at large. The role also entails managing food storage effectively by receiving deliveries, dating, rotating, and stocking food supplies to minimize waste and ensure food safety and freshness.
Attention to food safety and sanitation regulations is critical in this role, with the cook required to maintain high standards to protect the health of guests and staff alike. The cook must also demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills, exhibiting the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced kitchen environment. Collaboration with the Kitchen Manager and fellow cooks is essential to ensure the smooth operation of mealtime service.
The position offers a competitive starting pay of $20.00 per hour and benefits including dental insurance, health insurance, paid time off, and vision insurance. Working in this role is more than just about cooking meals; it supports an organizational goal to enhance the recovery process and provide emergency housing assistance to vulnerable populations in the Albany community. The person in this role plays a vital part in the daily operations of CHANCE, contributing directly to the welfare and recovery of individuals in need.
Working at CHANCE means being part of a compassionate team that values dedication, respect, and confidentiality. Prospective candidates must be dependable and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s code of conduct, policies, and procedures. The environment is collaborative and requires a hands-on approach to meet the needs of the center’s guests effectively. This makes the Cook role integral not only for meal preparation but also for upholding the mission of CHANCE and providing support in a nurturing environment.
