Job Description
Child Saving Institute (CSI) is a longstanding nonprofit organization based in Omaha, Nebraska, with a rich history dating back to 1892. For over a century, CSI has been dedicated to championing the rights and well-being of children and families by fostering environments that promote emotional, mental, and physical health. Committed to serving the community, CSI provides a wide range of supportive services emphasizing child development, nutrition, safety, and education to empower children to thrive and reach their full potential. As a reputable entity in the child welfare sector, CSI focuses on creating nurturing and inclusive environments for children and their families, grounded in compassion, respect, and professional excellence.
The Child Saving Institute is currently seeking a passionate Cook to join their Food Services team, located at two Omaha addresses: 4545 Dodge Street and 6908 Mercy Road. This full-time position operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, offering a competitive hourly wage of $19.00. The role is vital to the organization's mission, as it directly supports the nutritional health and development of infants, toddlers, and preschool children served by CSI. The Cook will be responsible for preparing, serving, and storing nutritious, child-friendly meals that comply with USDA CACFP guidelines as well as strict health department regulations, ensuring that all food served maintains the highest standards of safety and quality.
In this position, the Cook will handle multiple duties including batch cooking, safe food storage, and special dietary accommodations for children with allergies or medical needs. Attention to detail is critical, as the Cook must complete accurate documentation such as temperature and cleaning logs, manage inventory efficiently using First-In, First-Out methods, and coordinate with kitchen and classroom staff to ensure meals align with attendance and scheduling. Working in a child-focused environment requires patience, strong communication, and teamwork skills, along with a commitment to confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and promoting a positive workplace atmosphere.
Candidates should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, along with six months of cooking or food service experience. Experience within childcare, nonprofit, school, healthcare, or institutional food service settings is preferred, but a willingness to learn USDA CACFP guidelines and child nutrition standards is equally important. Physical demands include the ability to stand, walk, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and operate kitchen equipment efficiently and safely in a moderate to occasionally loud environment.
The Cook role at CSI offers individuals a unique opportunity to contribute to a meaningful mission by ensuring that children receive meals that support their growth and learning in a safe, caring environment. It is ideal for motivated individuals eager to work collaboratively in a professional kitchen setting dedicated to children’s health and development. CSI provides ongoing training and professional growth opportunities, emphasizing respect for diversity and inclusive practices. This position requires reliable transportation that meets agency vehicle inspection requirements, a valid driver's license with limited points, and proof of insurance. The organization is committed to full inclusion and reasonable accommodations to support employees with disabilities.
