Job Description

Straight and Narrow, headquartered in Paterson, New Jersey, is recognized as the largest program of its kind dedicated to providing innovative and compassionate services for individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Established with a mission to make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by addiction, Straight and Narrow operates numerous Residential and Outpatient Treatment Facilities alongside community programs across multiple locations including Paterson, Passaic, and Secaucus. The organization is committed to offering high-quality care and support through evidence-based methodologies, fostering an environment where recovery is accessible and encouraged for all clients. Their dedication to comprehensive treatment has made them a leader in the region, emphasizing not only the physical aspects of recovery but also promoting mental health and well-being. With a focus on compassion, professionalism, and community engagement, Straight and Narrow serves as a beacon of hope and recovery for many individuals and families facing the challenges of substance use disorders.

The role of Cook/Food Service (Per Diem) at Straight and Narrow is integral to the smooth operation of their food service program across all program locations. This position offers an hourly wage of $18 and involves a variety of responsibilities centered around meal preparation, service, and delivery within established food service standards. The Food Service and Delivery Staff play a vital part in ensuring that every meal served meets the organization’s quality, safety, and timing expectations. This role requires a dedicated individual who is passionate about food service operations and who understands the importance of nutrition and hygiene in a treatment setting. It involves following predetermined menus closely, preparing meals according to standardized recipes, and ensuring meals are prepared ahead of schedule when necessary to maintain service consistency.

In addition to meal preparation, this position also encompasses significant responsibilities in purchasing, inventory management, and food cost control. Cook/Food Service staff must coordinate with the Director of Food Services to submit purchase orders promptly, monitor inventory levels to prevent shortages, and actively participate in minimizing food waste through proper storage, reuse, or repurposing food safely when applicable. A critical aspect of this role is the adherence to food safety regulations, sanitation standards, and the correct handling of kitchen equipment to maintain a safe and clean food service environment. Staff must be vigilant about equipment maintenance and report any malfunctions immediately to ensure safety and efficiency.

Professional conduct and communication are emphasized in this role. Staff must demonstrate clear, respectful, and timely communication with colleagues and maintain a high level of professionalism at all times, especially since they interact with clients, visitors, and other staff members. The use of mobile phones is restricted during working hours to ensure focus and productivity. Privacy and professional boundaries are strictly maintained, with no sharing of personal information with clients or visitors.

Overall, working as a Cook/Food Service staff member at Straight and Narrow involves a blend of culinary skills, inventory management, and customer service, all within a supportive and mission-driven organization. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about contributing to the healthcare and recovery community through exceptional food service, hygiene, and teamwork. The per diem nature of the job provides flexibility while allowing staff to be part of a meaningful and impactful environment.
