Job Description

This role is for a Cook who plays a vital part in HMSHost's day-to-day operations. The Cook’s responsibilities include preparing cooked foods across multiple kitchen stations such as Fry, Flat Top Griddle, Pantry, and handling egg cooking. This position requires a versatile professional skilled in various culinary techniques who can follow recipes and product directions accurately. The Cook must maintain communication with the management team and servers regarding ticket times and potential issues, ensuring the highest quality of customer service. This is a non-exempt position, typically reporting to Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager, or General Manager depending on the location.

As a Cook at HMSHost, you will be expected to maintain excellent food safety and sanitation standards compliant with HACCP guidelines, which reflects the company’s commitment to quality and safety. The role involves tasks such as tasting products to ensure quality, following menus, estimating food requirements, checking production, and maintaining records that aid in planning and requisitioning supplies. Additionally, the Cook operates a variety of kitchen equipment, prepares ingredients by washing, peeling, cutting, and shredding fruits and vegetables, stocks and rotates products, and checks temperatures to ensure freshness and safety.

The ideal candidate brings a minimum of one year of cooking experience, preferably in a high-volume, casual dining restaurant environment, and possesses substantial food preparation skills. They must know how to prepare soups, sautés, broilers, fried foods, and pantry items. Physical requirements such as lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, twisting, standing for extended periods, and working in hot environments are essential aspects of the job. Safety considerations include frequent use of sharp utensils, handling hot plates, and immersing hands in water mixed with cleaning chemicals.

Job Duties

  • follow recipes and/or product directions for preparing, seasoning, cooking, tasting, carving and serving food items including soups, meats, vegetables, desserts and other food and beverage products
  • taste products, follow menus, estimate food requirements, check production and keep records to plan production requirements and requisition supplies and equipment
  • clean and sanitize work stations and equipment
  • practice excellent food safety and sanitation practices and comply with HACCP standards
  • operate a variety of kitchen equipment
  • measure and mix ingredients, wash, peel, cut and shred fruits and vegetables
  • stock, date, rotate and check temperature of product
