County of Santa Clara, located in California, is a prominent governmental organization dedicated to serving a diverse population through a range of public services and programs. As the local governing body, the County is committed to fostering community well-being, public health, safety, and sustainability across its various departments. Among its essential functions is the provision of nutritious meals in county facilities and institutions, ensuring that residents, clients, and staff receive safe and high-quality food service. Known for its robust and inclusive community programs, the County operates several institutional kitchens within hospitals, detention centers, and other public service establishments, all dedicated to delivering excellent food preparation and service standards.
The Extra-Help Cook position within the County of Santa Clara represents a vital role in managing and executing food preparation and service duties on a part-time, temporary basis. These Extra-Help opportunities cater to individuals seeking flexible employment without long-term benefits but with the chance to contribute meaningfully to public service. This role emphasizes cooking, preparing, and serving meals in both small and large quantities in county-operated facilities and institutions. Candidates will be required to demonstrate strong culinary skills, particularly in institutional settings such as hospitals, juvenile detention centers, or large-scale dining environments.
Under close supervision, this position involves a variety of food service tasks ranging from preparing special diet meals to operating industrial kitchen equipment safely and effectively. Employees will be expected to follow stringent health and safety guidelines encompassing sanitation, food handling, and storage procedures. A key responsibility includes monitoring food temperatures and maintaining accurate records to comply fully with food safety standards. The role further demands adeptness in managing food inventories, coordinating meal orders, and working collaboratively with other kitchen staff while ensuring minimal food wastage and proper use of leftovers.
This position offers the opportunity to develop administrative competencies, including preparing reports and managing documentation related to food supplies and kitchen operations. Additionally, employees may be tasked with instructing and overseeing cooking activities and schedules within their work area, contributing to efficient kitchen management. The role requires the ability to read, interpret, and follow prescribed menus and recipes with precision, including the preparation of specialized dietary items such as low sodium or sugar-free meals.
Candidates for this role must be prepared to meet certain standards, including the capacity to travel between county locations and maintain appropriate licenses if driving is necessary. Knowledge of safety and security protocols in the kitchen environment is vital, with an emphasis on reporting equipment malfunctions and ensuring a safe workspace. Importantly, all County of Santa Clara employees, including Extra-Help workers, are designated Disaster Service Workers, underscoring the expectation that they participate in emergency response efforts as required.
This role is ideal for experienced cooks who thrive in institutional food service environments, appreciate working as part of a team, and are committed to serving the community with dedication and professionalism. The County provides a supportive workplace environment dedicated to public health and well-being, emphasizing continuous improvement, safety compliance, and respectful service to a diverse population. Potential candidates should be ready to engage in a structured examination process to qualify for inclusion on the Extra-Help eligible list, with selections guided by demonstrated skills and knowledge in institutional cooking and food service standards.
