Job Description

UCI Health is the clinical enterprise of the University of California, Irvine, and stands as the only academic health system based in Orange County, California. This distinguished institution encompasses its main campus, the UCI Medical Center—a 459-bed acute care hospital located in Orange, California—along with four hospitals and affiliated physicians within the UCI Health Community Network that serve Orange and Los Angeles counties, complemented by multiple ambulatory care centers across the region. Recognized repeatedly among America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for 23 consecutive years, UCI Medical Center delivers both tertiary and quaternary care. This world-class facility is home to Orange County's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, a high-risk perinatal/neonatal program, and has earned accreditation as an American College of Surgeons-verified Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma center. The center also features a gold level 1 geriatric emergency department and operates a regional burn center, positioning itself as a critical healthcare provider to a population approaching 4 million people spanning Orange County, western Riverside County, and southeast Los Angeles County.

The role of Cook at UCI Health is a vital part of the healthcare experience, directly influencing patient satisfaction and care through exceptional meal preparation. This position involves preparing, seasoning, and cooking a variety of food items using multiple cooking techniques such as steaming, poaching, broiling, and braising. The cook will work according to established recipes, handling both scratch and convenience ingredients to provide nutritious and safe meal options to patients, as well as servicing the Medical Center Cafeteria and special catered events. The selected incumbent will ensure that all food preparation complies with the highest standards of hygiene and safety. This role demands a comprehensive understanding of dietary requirements, including regular and therapeutic diets, which are crucial in a health system environment. The successful candidate will exhibit strong customer service skills to interact effectively with patients, staff, and guests, ensuring a positive dining experience.

The position demands flexibility with schedules, including the capability to work alternate shifts encompassing days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Knowledge of common culinary terminology, accurate measurement of ingredients, and mathematical skills for recipe adjustments are essential. Communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are required to follow instructions precisely and maintain good teamwork. Additionally, the role requires maintaining a work pace that meets the demands of the workload and fostering cooperative relationships throughout the Health System.

UCI Health encourages professional growth and adherence to healthcare standards, embodying a commitment to excellence and compassionate care. As a Cook, you will contribute significantly to the holistic well-being of patients by preparing meals that support their health and recovery. This role is crucial in supporting UCI Health’s mission to provide outstanding clinical care to the community. Join a reputable institution that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, offering rich opportunities for learning and development within a healthcare setting. UCI Health provides a comprehensive benefits package designed to make employment rewarding and supportive of work-life balance. The institution’s policies reflect a strong commitment to the safety and health of its workforce and community, including background checks, vaccination policies, and a drug-free environment. UCI Health is an Equal Opportunity Employer, dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive workplace where all employees can thrive.
