Job Description

The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre is a well-established not-for-profit, government-funded facility located in south Winnipeg. It is a shining example of compassionate eldercare, operating as a 200-bed institution dedicated to providing professional and dignified care to seniors who can no longer live independently. The Centre is renowned for blending professional healthcare services with a warm, homely environment that embraces Jewish values and traditions while welcoming seniors from all cultural backgrounds. This commitment to cultural sensitivity, combined with a robust employee culture, makes the Simkin Centre a unique place to work and receive care.

Working as part of the Facility Support team within the Simkin Centre, this temporary cook position carries a vital role in maintaining the high standards of meal preparation for residents. The successful candidate will be responsible for cooking menu items for all diets in the quantities specified by production sheets, ensuring strict adherence to the guidelines of the Cook Chill production method. This role is distinct in its requirement to comply with Jewish dietary laws, known as Kashrut, as mandated by the Centre, which reflects its commitment to honoring cultural and religious practices.

The cook’s responsibilities extend beyond meal preparation; they include ensuring ingredient and portion control consistent with standardized recipes and taking on leadership roles in the absence of the Food Services Manager by supervising and replacing dietary staff. This position requires a strong dedication to health and safety standards, as every task must be performed aligning with established regulations, policies, and procedures. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely is necessary for managing kitchen operations effectively. In addition to the technical cooking and production duties, the cook must be adaptable and willing to take on other tasks as assigned, contributing to the smooth operation of the Facility Support department.

This role offers a competitive hourly wage of $24.166, with the opportunity to work in an environment that values respect, cultural inclusion, and employee engagement. Employees at the Simkin Centre benefit from an employee assistance program, a registered pension plan through the Health Employees Pension Plan (HEPP), an on-site cafe with subsidized pricing, and various staff recognition events. These benefits are designed to support both the well-being of the staff and their professional growth.

Joining the Simkin Centre means becoming part of a dedicated team that provides essential services in a community-oriented atmosphere. This is an ideal position for individuals who are experienced in commercial kitchen environments, have training in cook chill production, and are comfortable working within a framework that respects cultural dietary requirements. The role is based in Winnipeg’s vibrant south area, providing a stable and rewarding employment opportunity in the health care and social assistance sector. Prospective candidates should note the necessity of a criminal record check including vulnerable sector search, adult abuse registry check, and child abuse registry check as conditions of employment, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to safety and security for its residents and staff.
