Job Description

Caltech, or the California Institute of Technology, is a world-renowned science and engineering institute dedicated to answering fundamental scientific questions through innovation and discovery. Known globally for its cutting-edge research and top-tier academic programs, Caltech brings together some of the brightest minds and most advanced technological resources to push the boundaries of knowledge. As one of the premier institutions in scientific education and research, Caltech fosters a collaborative and diverse community committed to excellence, creativity, and practical impact. Situated in Pasadena, California, Caltech sustains a vibrant campus environment that supports both students and staff through comprehensive programs and services, including innovative dining options tailored to the needs of a dynamic academic community.

Among these campus services is Caltech Dining Services (CDS), which operates multiple dining units such as Browne Dining Hall, Red Door Marketplace, Broad Café, and Avery Kitchen. These facilities serve a community of approximately 2,000 individuals with an emphasis on high-quality food and excellent customer experience. With a commitment to supporting student life around the clock, CDS also runs a robust Board Program covering over 850 students seven days a week and an expanding catering operation for campus events. The CDS team is energetic, collaborative, and dedicated to maintaining a high standard of service and culinary excellence.

This culinary role at Caltech Dining Services is an exciting opportunity for individuals with a passion for food preparation in a fast-paced, creative environment. Reporting under the guidance of the Chef de Cuisine and Sous Chefs, the position demands proficiency in all areas of culinary services including cooking, preparation, and food safety, relying on the employee’s experience and sound judgment to carry out assigned tasks independently. The role suits candidates who have experience working in high-volume restaurants or food service settings and are comfortable with a diverse range of cooking methods and ingredient handling. This dynamic position requires versatility to work at various food stations across multiple dining locations, adjusting to business needs with flexible scheduling that may include weekends, overtime, or shift changes.

Key job responsibilities include preparing main dishes and side orders, cooking from scratch with recipe adherence or approved substitutions, maintaining meticulous sanitation and organization standards, and upholding all health and safety regulations. The ideal candidate possesses strong knife skills, ingredient knowledge, and the ability to work efficiently while contributing to a positive team atmosphere. Communication skills, ownership, adaptability, and a proactive approach to challenges are essential traits, as is the ability to maintain composure and professionalism under pressure. This is designated an essential reporting position, meaning the employee’s presence is vital for Caltech’s operational continuity and is expected to report to campus promptly during emergencies.

Caltech offers a competitive hourly wage of $20.00 to $26.25 depending on experience and education. The institution values internal equity and includes additional benefits such as health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, generous paid time off, tuition reimbursement, and other employee perks.
