The role of Cook at KinderCare Learning Companies is vital in ensuring the health and well-being of the children in their care. As a Cook, you will prepare nutritious and appealing meals and snacks following menus developed by in-house nutritionists. This position requires attention to detail in food preparation, proper food storage, and hygiene practices to maintain a safe kitchen environment. The job involves preparing meals that meet dietary needs, including for children with food allergies, and following strict food cross-contamination protocols. Beyond meal preparation, the Cook may also be responsible for ordering food supplies, maintaining kitchen equipment, documenting necessary information, and supporting center staff with daily duties as needed.

This role demands a genuine love for children and a commitment to making a positive difference in their daily lives. Cooks work closely with center staff and leadership to contribute to overall center success, including goals related to enrollment, accreditation, and community engagement. Applicants should be prepared to use basic computer skills for documentation and have the physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds. The position is hourly with a pay range between $17.35 and $18.50, with an additional premium in Minnesota under a specific grant program.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one year of institutional cooking experience
  • Possess or willing to obtain a Food Handler’s License
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English
  • Must be physically able to work in kitchen and some classrooms
  • Commitment to child safety and nutrition

Job Qualifications

  • Strong desire to make a difference and love for children
  • Knowledge of food safety conditions and storage
  • Familiarity with food allergy management and avoidance of cross-contamination
  • Ability to follow nutritious menus and prepare sufficient food quantities
  • Basic math skills for measuring and calculating serving portions
  • Food Handler’s License or willingness to obtain
  • Minimum one year of institutional cooking experience
  • Food ordering experience preferred
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to communicate in English

Job Duties

  • Prepare healthy and tasty meals and snacks according to menu and recipes
  • Maintain kitchen and related equipment safely and hygienically
  • Order food and supplies as needed
  • Dispense and store medication as requested
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation according to company and licensing requirements
  • Support daily center duties and assist center staff as required
  • Partner with center staff and leadership to achieve goals around enrollment, accreditation, and engagement
