The Cook Assistant position is a full-time, 12-month, regular employment opportunity based in Athens on the Ohio University campus. This role is classified within the AFSCME 1699 Bargaining Unit and is subject to pay grade AFSCME 01, with hourly wages ranging from $14.43 to $18.30. The position requires working varied shifts with every other weekend off, focusing primarily on assisting the cooking staff in food preparation and kitchen operations. The successful candidate will work under the direction of a lead worker or under general supervision by food service management.

In this role, the Cook Assistant will support all kitchen activities, including the preparation and cooking of food items according to standardized recipes and operational guidelines. Responsibilities include handling hot and cold food preparation, slicing meats and vegetables, preparing meat proteins before cooking, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. The assistant will also set up and break down food service lines, wash dishes and kitchen equipment, mop floors, and dispose of trash responsibly. All duties must comply with Ohio University and OSHA health and safety standards.

The Cook Assistant role involves physical stamina, including standing for prolonged periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working around hot ovens and sharp utensils. Job Duties

  • Adheres to all OSHA and Ohio University required guidelines
  • prepares and cooks food items to standardized recipes using standard kitchen equipment
  • cleans and prepares hot, cold, special menu foods, sliced meats, cheeses and vegetables
  • prepares meat proteins before cooking
  • sets up and breaks down food lines
  • cleans and breaks down work area including scraping, washing pots, pans and dishes, mopping, swiping and emptying trash
  • follows prep and production sheets using standardized recipes and department guidelines
  • performs other related duties
