Job Description
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) is a comprehensive healthcare organization committed to providing high-quality and equitable health care services to the residents of Winnipeg and surrounding areas. WRHA operates an integrated network covering various health services—ranging from acute hospital care to community-based programs—ensuring that clients across the region receive holistic and accessible healthcare. Recognized as one of the leading health authorities in Canada, WRHA is dedicated to fostering a safe, healthy environment through innovation, collaboration, and responsive care tailored to diverse populations, including Indigenous communities. The WRHA values inclusivity and cultural sensitivity while promoting a supportive workplace culture where employees can grow their careers within the healthcare sector.
This position is based at the WRHA Community Health Services located at 1041 Portage Ave, specifically serving within the Women's Treatment & Community Services department. As a member of the Clinical Support job stream and represented under CUPE union, this casual role offers flexible working hours, including days, evenings, and weekends with shifts ranging from 3 to 8 hours per day. The position offers a competitive hourly wage between $24.166 and $27.941 depending on experience and qualifications, with an annual base of 2080 hours.
The primary responsibility of the Cook is to prepare and cook meals for clients in a way that promotes their health and well-being. Reporting to the Supervisor, the Cook will contribute to an environment that fosters respect, safety, and nurturing support for clients. In this role, effective communication, teamwork, and a strong ethical foundation are key attributes necessary to succeed. The ideal candidate must be approachable, flexible, and able to respond promptly to client needs and crises. This position requires the incumbent to not only prepare food but also engage positively with clients to support their interpersonal and daily living skills development.
The incumbent will also work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team, utilizing solution-focused problem-solving approaches. Responsibilities include modeling and teaching skills that enhance client’s emotional management and problem-solving abilities. The Cook plays a vital part in enhancing the overall client experience through both the nutritional quality of meals and the supportive interactions that occur in the food preparation setting.
Candidates should have a minimum of two years of experience in quantity cooking, with a sound understanding of food safety and sanitation standards. Educational qualifications include graduation from a recognized cooking program at the technical or community college level or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification in food handling is mandatory, and CPR and First Aid certification are considered valuable assets.
Physical ability to perform duties is required, including lifting and carrying weights up to 40 lbs. Due to the nature of care the clients receive, a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check, including vulnerable sector search, and Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks are mandatory conditions for employment. WRHA embraces diversity and encourages applications from individuals of Indigenous descent and people with disabilities, assuring accommodations during the hiring process.
Joining WRHA means becoming part of a dedicated team striving to provide excellent healthcare services with a commitment to ethical practice, respect, and continuous professional growth. The Cook plays an essential support role within the health authority’s comprehensive service framework, contributing directly to client care and overall service excellence.
