Job Description

The Cook 2 position at Bellevue College Food Services is a full-time, regular, classified role responsible for skilled cooking and leading food preparation operations during assigned shifts. This position functions as the head cook, overseeing and working closely with Cook 1 staff and student workers to ensure efficient, high-quality food production and service. The Cook 2 plays a critical role in managing kitchen activities, including delegating tasks, instructing on food preparation techniques, and maintaining strict standards for sanitation, food safety, and customer service. The role expects the incumbent to monitor and manage food inventory levels meticulously and to communicate ordering needs to the Food Service Manager to ensure the kitchen is well-stocked and prepared for daily and special event demands.

This position is a key player in menu planning, food preparation, and presentation, working with a variety of kitchen equipment and ingredients to produce meals that meet established recipes and standards. The Cook 2 leads both routine meal service and catering operations, ensuring that food quality, timing, and presentation exceed expectations at all times. Beyond cooking, the role encompasses responsibilities such as baking desserts, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and record-keeping related to inventory and food usage. Job Requirements

  • Two years of cooking experience in a large-scale food service or culinary operation
  • demonstrated effective communication skills and ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • demonstrated effective customer service skills when working with employees, students, and visitors
  • ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • experience working with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment
  • must obtain a King County Food Handler's Permit within fourteen days of hire
  • knowledge of food values and nutrition
  • knowledge of personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions
  • knowledge of proper care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment
  • knowledge of record keeping such as inventory
  • knowledge of report preparation such as supply levels and usage

Job Duties

  • Perform skilled cooking duties and lead food preparation
  • supervise and participate in large-scale preparation and service of food on assigned shifts
  • delegate, assign, and review work performed by Cook 1 and student workers
  • bake pies, cakes, cookies, and other desserts
  • inspect food during preparation for quantity, quality, and handling
  • instruct and train Cook 1 and student workers in cooking, food preparation, and safe food handling practices
  • operate kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, choppers, shredders, steamers, grills, grinders, steam kettles, fryers, meat/cheese slicer, and mandolin slicer
  • assist in menu planning and determining food quantities
  • maintain records and prepare reports
  • prepare food items according to standard menus, recipes, and instructions
  • lead and participate in cleaning kitchen areas and equipment ensuring sanitation and safety
  • adjust recipes based on volume of demand
  • monitor food inventory levels and communicate ordering needs
  • lead and participate in proper storage, utilization, and rotation of leftover ingredients and products
  • provide effective customer service
  • oversee food preparation and service for catering events
  • direct and supervise catering-related food preparation tasks
  • ensure catering food items, supplies, and equipment are prepared and ready
  • monitor catering inventory needs
  • communicate and coordinate with catering supervisor
  • perform other duties as assigned
