Job Description
The hiring organization is a school district's Nutrition Services department located in Wichita, Kansas, specifically operating from the Food Production Center at 3850 N. Hydraulic. This department is responsible for preparing and distributing nutritious meals to schools within the district, ensuring that children receive healthy and balanced food options during their school day. The district prioritizes food safety, hygiene, and regulatory compliance, aligning with guidelines such as HACCP to maintain the highest standards of food production and handling. The facility employs a team-oriented approach where each member plays a crucial role in meeting the daily nutritional needs of students across multiple schools. This establishment values professionalism, timely attendance, and a positive work environment, emphasizing respect, communication, and mutual support among employees.
The open position is for a Cook 2, a full-time, day shift role with a 196-day calendar aligned to the school year. The role reports directly to the Supervisor of Central Food Production and works under the guidance of a Technician. The primary responsibility of the Cook 2 is to prepare food in the central food production facility according to established recipes and production plans, adhering strictly to HACCP food safety guidelines. This involves precise recipe calculations, measuring and portioning ingredients, packaging food items, and ensuring the accurate rotation and storage of inventory using the FIFO (first in, first out) method. Additionally, the Cook 2 supports the general upkeep and cleanliness of the kitchen and associated areas, including sweeping, mopping, and cleaning of equipment. Since this role serves multiple schools, the employee must maintain flexibility and the capability to substitute in various locations as needed.
This position demands a blend of technical culinary skills and interpersonal capabilities. The Cook 2 must be adept at communicating effectively with supervisors and team members, demonstrating sound judgment, a cooperative mindset, and a professional demeanor. The individual will be responsible for preparing specialized meal items for students with dietary restrictions or special needs, requiring attention to detail and compliance with nutrition standards. Physical demands include frequent lifting, carrying, bending, and standing, sometimes involving weights up to 50 pounds and exposure to cleaning chemicals.
Candidates for this role should have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, with mandatory completion of a Food Handler's Card within the first 30 days of employment and attendance at a Food Safety Basics class within six months. The Cook 2 must be capable of working efficiently under supervision while contributing positively to the team dynamic and helping the department achieve its mission of delivering quality nutrition to students. This position is non-exempt under FLSA regulations, emphasizing the importance of punctuality, appropriate appearance, and adherence to a full-time schedule during the school year. Overall, this opportunity offers an engaging work environment within a community-focused organization dedicated to fostering student health and well-being through excellent food service practices.
