The role offers variable weekly hours and shift start/end times, adapting to the needs of the department and patient care demands. The position is non-exempt and falls under the job family of preparers, emphasizing hands-on food preparation and kitchen operations.

The Cook 1 position requires a minimum of one year of culinary or related work experience, complemented by fundamental knowledge of food service operations, food safety, and handling. Certified food handling credentials, such as a current Deschutes County Food Handlers Card or ServSafe Food Handler Certification, are mandatory, while a ServSafe Manager Certification is preferred. Candidates should possess strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues and management while maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety in the kitchen. Physical demands include prolonged standing and walking, lifting and carrying various weights, and occasional exposure to environmental elements such as heat, cold, moisture, and noise. Safety awareness and the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment are essential for the well-being of both the employee and those served by the department.
