The role of Second Cook at Mercy Medical Center is a full-time position working on rotating shifts, offering an hourly pay range from $18.00 to $26.10, depending on experience, skills, and education. This position is critical within the Food and Nutrition team, responsible for preparing and cooking a wide variety of hot food items for patients, the cafeteria, Café 299, and special functions. The Second Cook will consistently maintain safe, sanitary conditions in the cooking areas and equipment, adhering strictly to department and health standards.

Working as a Second Cook at this medical center involves utilizing from-scratch cooking methods as well as approved recipes to cater to both regular house diets and variety of modified diets, ensuring that all food produced is of the highest quality, visually appealing, and nutritionally sound. The role demands productivity aligned with meal period schedules and strict compliance with food safety protocols including temperature controls and proper storage to avoid contamination. The candidate will ensure efficient organization of preparation, cooking, and storage areas to optimize workflow and maintain department standards.

The working environment requires physical endurance due to prolonged standing, walking, and frequent lifting of heavy items up to 50 pounds, along with working with hot kitchen appliances and sharp tools. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of kitchen equipment such as ovens, mixers, slicers, and grinders, and preferably have completed a certified food service sanitation course. Job Duties

  • Prepares and cooks hot food items using from scratch cooking methods, mixes and/or other convenience items, and ready to cook products
  • Utilizes approved recipes and instructions to prepare and cook regular (house) and a variety of modified diet items
  • Assures that top quality, properly prepared, eye appealing products are produced at all times
  • Maintains productivity in order to meet department hot food needs as required by meal period schedules
  • Cleans and sanitizes all cooking areas and equipment as instructed and as needed to meet department sanitation requirements
  • Uses safe food handling procedures at all times to ensure food wholesomeness including maintaining safe temperatures and maintaining proper food storage to ensure that cross contamination doesn’t result
  • Maintains proper organization of all food prep, cooking, and refrigerated storage areas to ensure optimal effectiveness of work processes
