Job Description
The Delta Breeze Event Center at Travis Air Force Base, California, is hiring for a Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) position as a Cook. This establishment operates within the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) activities sector for the Air Force and Space Force. The Delta Breeze Event Center is a key facility designed to provide quality food service to military personnel, their families, and authorized users on base. Being a part of this center means working in a dynamic environment that values service, efficiency, and the well-being of its community. Travis AFB is known for its vibrant community and extensive amenities, including access to the Base Exchange (BX), gym, outdoor recreation, library, marina, golf course, bowling center, and arts and crafts center, offering an enriching work-life balance for employees.
This position offers permanent employment with an intermittent work schedule, meaning there are no guaranteed hours, but workers may be scheduled up to 40 hours per week depending on need. The hourly pay rate for this role is $23.46, classified under the NA 4 pay scale with no promotion potential. This is a competitive service job with no supervisory responsibilities and does not require a security clearance or drug testing. The candidate selected will be subject to a background investigation and a pre-employment physical examination to ensure suitability and physical capability for the role.
The Cook position involves performing a range of simple cooking tasks that require minimal processing, such as preparing pancakes, sausages, eggs, hamburgers, and fresh or canned vegetables. The role requires proficiency in handling hot cereals, broiled meats, prepared soups, sauces, gravies, and cold sandwich fillings. It also includes preparing convenience foods like frozen hash browns, fish fillets, chicken nuggets, and baking pizzas in some instances. The cook will be responsible for food preparation tasks including peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading. They will also weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients for menu items, maintain the salad bar, portion food for distribution, and manage leftovers according to established procedures.
In addition to cooking, the role entails cleaning and washing kitchen equipment regularly to maintain hygiene standards. The cook must be able to mix ingredients according to written recipes to produce high-quality food products efficiently while minimizing waste. Candidates must have prior experience and knowledge of food preparation methods acquired in settings such as grills, snack bars, restaurants, or clubs and must be capable of safely operating and cleaning food service equipment. The successful applicant should possess the ability to season food appropriately and assess when items are cooked to completion.
This position is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the United States and is inclusive of various applicant preferences, including military spouses and veterans. Applicants are required to provide proof of eligibility, a resume that supports prior experience, and may need to submit related documents such as a food handler's certificate or professional certifications relevant to the role. The job offers access to exclusive base amenities and demands a commitment to federal service excellence, public trust, and adherence to military installation security protocols including possession of a REAL ID or authorized combination of identity documents.
Overall, this is an excellent opportunity for culinary professionals who enjoy working in a supportive, mission-focused environment serving the military community. The role offers a rewarding career path within a well-established federal employer with comprehensive benefits and a chance to contribute to the morale and welfare of service members and their families at Travis Air Force Base.
