Job Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in West Haven, Connecticut, is a vital healthcare institution dedicated to providing comprehensive medical services and support to our nation's veterans. As part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this Medical Center is committed to offering the highest quality care tailored to the unique needs of veterans, supporting their health and well-being with compassion and respect. The Medical Center operates various specialized programs, including inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services, and plays a crucial role in ensuring veterans receive timely and effective medical treatment. This federal institution values professionalism, integrity, and dedication to service, fostering a collaborative work environment aimed at improving veterans’ lives.

This position offers a full-time, permanent role with a competitive hourly wage range of $26.39 to $30.07, within the Federal Wage System at the WG-06 grade level. The Cook position is based in the Nutrition and Food Service Line of the West Haven Medical Center and is primarily responsible for preparing and delivering nutritious, high-quality meals to veteran patients. The incumbent must ensure meal preparation processes adhere strictly to safety and sanitation policies while maintaining the highest food quality standards. The role demands attention to detail regarding work operations, adherence to proper food handling techniques, and management of cooking schedules to ensure timely service.

The successful candidate will utilize their culinary skills to prepare a variety of menu items, including regular and specialized therapeutic diets such as diabetic, low sodium, low protein, and gluten-free meals. Responsibilities include cooking meats, poultry, fish, vegetables, soups, gravies, sauces, and desserts while ensuring proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment like ovens, steamers, mixers, and food processors. The Cook will also conduct deep cleaning tasks for kitchen appliances and spaces, monitor inventory by receiving and storing perishable items, and properly label and rotate stock to prevent spoilage.

Working in this position requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, and safety awareness due to prolonged standing, exposure to extreme temperatures, handling of sharp objects, and operation of kitchen machinery. The environment can be hot, noisy, and humid, and the incumbent must comply with protocols including wearing hair coverings, gloves, and other protective gear for food safety and sanitation purposes. The role also involves cooperation with supervisors and team members within a structured work schedule that includes rotating weekends and a shift from 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM.

Moreover, this position utilizes Direct-Hire Authority, indicating an expedited placement process for qualified applicants. Veterans will receive full consideration, though traditional veterans’ preference rules do not apply under this authority. The role emphasizes commitment to federal service values, including a one-year probationary period focusing on the employee's fitness and contribution to public interest. Embracing this opportunity means joining a workforce passionate about providing excellent service to veterans and improving operational efficiency within federal government culinary services.
