Job Description

Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) is a vital organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Marines, their families, and the broader Marine Corps community. MCCS operates comprehensive programs that provide support, services, and recreational activities, fostering a strong community environment and promoting the welfare of its members. The organization is staffed by a diverse team consisting of military personnel, civilian employees, contractors, and volunteers, all working together in a cohesive, service-oriented environment. MCCS is deeply committed to its mission of supporting the Marine Corps community with unwavering dedication and professionalism.

This specific job opportunity is for a full-time Cook position located at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar. The role is integral to the Child and Youth Programs (CYP), serving in either a Child Development Center (CDC) or School Age Care (SAC) program setting. The primary responsibility of the CYP Cook is preparing and cooking a variety of simple meals and snacks designed for children and youth. This includes basic cooking tasks such as preparing pancakes, sausage, eggs, hamburgers, and vegetables, along with other convenience foods like frozen hash browns, fish fillets, and chicken nuggets. The cook also assists in food preparation tasks including peeling, cutting, and assembling ingredients, ensuring that meals are nutritious, appealing, and meet dietary guidelines.

Beyond cooking, the position involves maintaining kitchen cleanliness and sanitation, operating dishwashing equipment, managing food storage and inventory, and adhering to health and safety regulations. The cook must ensure that all food preparation aligns with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Child and Adult Care Food Program standards and comply with local fire, security, and sanitation rules. This role requires vigilance in safeguarding the wellbeing of children by being a mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services for any suspected child abuse or neglect cases.

Working conditions include busy kitchen environments that may be warm and noisy, with exposure to steam, odors, and various physical demands like lifting and standing for extended periods. Physical stamina and attention to safety are critical in performing duties effectively in this setting. The successful candidate will also uphold principles of equal opportunity and safety standards while delivering exceptional customer service with courtesy and responsiveness.

Employment benefits for this full-time position include a 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer matching up to 5%, a NAF Pension Plan with employee contributions, comprehensive medical and dental insurance, life insurance options, flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care, health savings accounts, short-term disability coverage, leave donation programs, immediate annual and sick leave accruals, and a tuition assistance program. Employees with children benefit from childcare fee discounts.

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain Tier-1 Child Care background checks, pass pre-employment and annual physicals, and maintain specific certifications such as Food Handler, CPR, and First Aid. Effective communication skills in English and a proactive, team-oriented approach are essential.
