The position of Cook at SUN Behavioral Health is a vital role within the Dietary Services department. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Dietary Services, the Cook is responsible for preparing, seasoning, and cooking food for hospital patients, staff, and visitors. This role requires precision and adherence to hospital dietary guidelines, ensuring all meals meet nutritional and safety standards. The Cook assists with inventory control, manages food preparation processes, and ensures cleanliness and infection control are maintained throughout the kitchen. The role is integral to patient care and supports an environment that promotes patient safety and reduces health care errors. The Cook collaborates closely with registered dietitians to accommodate modified diets and works with food service workers to maintain a smooth and efficient kitchen operation. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • CPR and hospital-selected de-escalation technique certification
  • A current ServSafe certificate within 3 months of hire
  • Three years of experience in a food service line or restaurant setting

Job Qualifications

  • Some college courses preferred
  • One year in a hospital dietary department preferred
  • Previous experience in a behavioral health setting preferred
  • Maintains education and development appropriate for position

Job Duties

  • Determine types and quantities of meats, vegetables, and soups to be prepared by reviewing planned menus
  • Determine amount of foods needed to meet weekly menus and submit order to supervisor
  • Ensure meals are ready at specified times
  • Consult with supervisor regarding use of leftovers
  • Consult Registered Dietitian on modified diets as necessary
  • Supervise Food Services Workers when washing, trimming or preparing food
  • Measure and mix ingredients according to approved recipes using blenders, mixers, grinders, slicers, etc
  • Make sauces, soups, stews, casseroles, and desserts meeting established dietary guidelines
  • Cook meat, fish, and fowl in a variety of ways such as baking, roasting, broiling, and steaming
  • Carve meat, fish, and fowl into individual servings according to menu combinations and patient diet orders
  • Test foods being cooked to ensure proper cooking temperatures and adjust heat controls as necessary

  • Improve flavor and texture of food by adding ingredients or seasonings
  • Observe infection prevention and control practices at all times
  • Maintain kitchen in a clean, neat, and organized manner
  • Assist in serving patients when necessary
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
  • Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality
  • Work with the supervisor to ensure all food service staff are trained on fire suppression and other PPE protection as required by job duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned
