Job Description
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), specifically at the Topeka, KS location within the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 15), is seeking a part-time Cook to join their culinary team. The VA is a federal agency dedicated to serving veterans by providing high-quality health care services and other support programs. As part of this mission, the VA's Veterans Health Administration operates hospitals, clinics, and various healthcare facilities that require well-prepared nutritious meals to support the health and well-being of veterans. This establishment is known for its commitment to excellence in veteran care and values employees who are passionate about contributing to the welfare of those who have served our country.
The role of the Cook in this department is essential as it involves the preparation of nutritious, high-quality meals for veterans. This position is part-time, with variable work hours between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., including weekends and holidays, providing flexibility for workers seeking part-time employment. The Cook will earn between $23.21 and $27.09 per hour under the Wage Grade 4 pay scale, which reflects the importance of the culinary service in the healthcare setting where meal quality affects patient satisfaction and nutrition. There is no promotion potential with this role, indicating a specialized focus on the cooking function.
As a Cook at the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System, responsibilities include preparing and cooking a variety of meals that may require little to no processing. This includes hot cereals, dehydrated soups, sauces, gravies, grilled eggs, meat patties, pancakes, French toast, and assembling various sandwiches. The cook will also prepare fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables, bake frozen potatoes and pre-made batters, and heat convenience items such as frozen hash browns and chicken nuggets. They must follow menu plans and recipes accurately to ensure the quality and quantity of food meets prescribed standards, including accommodating modified diets.
The role demands adherence to strict sanitary and safety protocols. The Cook is responsible for washing, peeling, and cutting fruits and vegetables, assembling salads and desserts, weighing and measuring ingredients, and operating kitchen equipment safely. Keeping the work area clean and sanitized is a continuous task, including deep cleaning and equipment maintenance. This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, frequent bending and reaching, and the capacity to lift objects up to 40 pounds, emphasizing the physically demanding nature of the work environment.
The work environment involves exposure to temperature extremes, noise, cooking odors, and potential physical hazards such as burns or cuts. Employees must wear appropriate uniforms, hair coverings, and gloves when handling food, demonstrating the VA's commitment to health and safety standards. The Cook will work alongside other food service workers and supervisors in a team-oriented setting dedicated to providing excellent food service to veterans. Additionally, a probationary period of one year is required to ensure the fitness and suitability of the employee in advancing public interest.
This position welcomes applications from U.S. citizens and certain non-citizens eligible for appointment, including individuals eligible under career transition assistance plans. The VA encourages candidates who are committed to improving federal efficiency and upholding the values and rule of law of the United States. The application process includes a background investigation, and selected applicants will undergo onboarding procedures. Benefits available to federal employees provide a comprehensive package designed to promote well-being and job satisfaction. Overall, this role offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to veteran care through dedicated culinary service in a respected federal healthcare institution.
