Employees in this system experience endless support and appreciation, creating a rewarding career path within a prestigious healthcare setting that consistently ranks among the top hospitals nationally.
The Cook position at Cleveland Clinic Children s Hospital for Rehabilitation primarily supports the retail food service area, focusing on the preparation and serving of breakfast and lunch menu items. This role is essential in ensuring that patients, staff, and visitors receive nutritious and well-prepared meals in a timely manner. The cook acts as the grill cook, responsible for preparing a variety of short-order items such as burgers and quesadillas and setting up hot and cold breakfast stations. The role also includes assisting with patient food services during weekend and holiday rotations, preparing and delivering meal trays to nursing units, and interacting with patients by gathering meal selections through iPad technology. This position is suitable for candidates with limited prior cooking experience since complex recipe preparation is not required. However, some kitchen experience is beneficial to meet the expectations of the role effectively.
The work schedule for this position involves day shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with mandatory weekend and holiday rotations to support the hospital's continuous food service operations. Important responsibilities include reviewing menus and special orders to determine the types and quantities of food to prepare, following standardized recipes, and planning cooking schedules in coordination with supervisors and dietitians. The cook must adhere strictly to HACCP guidelines concerning food storage, handling, preparation, sanitation, and maintenance of the work area to ensure food safety and quality. Obtaining ServSafe certification within six months of hire is required, emphasizing the importance of safe food practices in this healthcare environment. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED and at least two years of experience in a professional or institutional food service setting. Preferred qualifications include completion of a formal cook training program or three or more years of related experience, with knowledge of diets and IDSSI standards being advantageous.
Physically, this role requires regular standing, walking, use of hands for manipulation of tools, reaching, stooping, and the ability to lift or move objects up to 75 pounds. Maintaining normal or corrected vision is necessary to perform job duties effectively. Caregivers in this role are expected to follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required to ensure both their safety and that of the patients. Although salaries vary based on market averages and specific individual agreements, the Cleveland Clinic encourages candidates to discuss compensation during the hiring process, recognizing the value of each candidates unique experience and qualifications. Joining Cleveland Clinic Children s Hospital for Rehabilitation as a cook means becoming part of a dedicated team focused on supporting recovery and wellness through quality food service in a professional and caring environment.
